Light weight Dasher vs 6 BR

Hello All
Just wanted to check and see if any one has ever built up a 6 Dasher chambered light weight gun,
I have a pile of old left over bits that i want to put back together (McMillan BR stock, rem action, couple of old barrels etc) that i what to use in the local 300-600 comps. barrel would a HV at 24" , be interested in hearing if any one has done this, or should i just do a straight 6 BR ?

I put one together last year to shoot in the 11lb class at Deep Creek in MT. Converted a 6PPC I had sitting in the back of the safe. Components are:

Hall M action R/R no eject, glued in not screwed
Old McMillan short range BR stock
Bartlein Sendero profile 8 twist 27" long
Jewell trigger
Leupold 45X

During load testing it shot .1-.3 with various loads at 100 yds. In August last year it shot a couple of mid 5" five shot groups at 1,000yds.

If I was limited to this rifle for local club level 600yd matches I would not feel handicapped at all.

I would want at least a 26 inch barrel. I have seen them cut off and rechambered a few ti,especially and down as short as 21 inches. Although at 1000 I feel they didn't do quite as good because they lost a little velocity. They shot OK. But whatever length barrel, the Dasher should be a little faster, which I feel helps at 600 or 1000. Matt

My first 6 BR build, was a Remington Syn. Varmint, that I added a HV 14 tw barrel, it weighted 13 lbs.

My second 6BR build, was a Hall action with a 12 tw barrel, see http://www.6mmbr.com/Schronce600.html. I later added a used 8 tw barrel to this Hall. After cutting the chamber was cut off it was 24" in 6BR. I later add the chamber punched to 6BRX. I shot one IBS 600 yds record and a 3.8" screamer group at 1000yds. with this gun in 6BRX chamber. This gun weighed 14 lbs.

I have done a few used PPC, and just had the chamber opened to 6BR and open boltface up to 6BR.

If you are only going to 600 yds. I would do a straight 6BR IMO.

Thanks everyone - great advice, my guess is it good be around 11 lb all up. I shoot a 17lb Dasher LG already, but this could be a interesting project

Thanks for the quick reply, on a side note, my other Dasher has a 28" barrel on it, but im only seeing 2880-2900 out of it with 33.2gr varget, behind a 107 smk (moly coated) which seems slow, not sure what I'll get out of this new one if the barrel length is around 24-25"

That is a little slow, but I had one barrel I could only get 2950 out of. Most I could get 3050 or more. But that one I could only use 32 grains of Varget but it shot great at 2950. Are you sure your Chronograph is right? Matt

I'll check next weekend, but i think it is, ( famous last words ) it still shoots good at 2880

Give another powder a try. Burn rates between lots of Varget can vary significantly and you may have a slow lot. Give R15 or H4895 a try and you may see your velocities back in the 2950-3050 range.

On a side note, if you do build a 11lb Dasher make sure you hang on to that rifle a bit more than you do with your 17lb LG.
