light strike with savage

i have two savage 93 mag rifles. one 17 hmr and one 22 mag. i have 10,000 plus rounds through the 22 mag and 100 rounds through the 17 . i started to get light strikes a month ago and i have made the following changes

i have checked firing pin protrusion it is good on both guns
head space is good on both guns
i have tried different lots of ammunition and different manufacturers

i have no idea what to do from here
i am getting 2-3 misfires per ten with the 22 mag
and 5-6 per ten with the 17

If you bought the 17 new, you may have a bad one. Have seen this problem with new 93s reported on other boards and the fix was returning it to Savage. Hog.

They make a spring that is 15% to 20% stronger than the stock spring in the Savage MKII and 93's. I put one in mine and it made a good difference, it is not so strong as to cause vibration when shooting and gives a much better hit on the case head. Price is very reasonable, I also got heavy bottom metal from them that works great, it will now hold the torque on the action, not bend like the stock bottom metal.
While it's apart, run the FP on a big stone, both sides and remove just polish the metal, you are just smoothing, not removing metal. A thin stone to just polish the inside of the bolt where the FP rides helps also.

He has a perm fix for the rifles with cronic FTF problems also.

They also do a pretty nice accurizing package on the RF and CF Savage rifes as well as just about any other type of bolt gun, fantastic Gunsmith.

Before you do anything else take the bolt apart and clean the firing pin spring and everthing it contact to include the spot where the firing pin would stop when all the the way forward. Crud gets up in there and thats what seems to happen first. Easy 1rst step check, if it still does it then you can go on from there in your diagnosis.

Worth a look anyway.

I'm having the same problem with a new 93. It first was about every 5th shot and only with Winchester but now I'm getting misfires with Hornady.

Close inspection shows the top of the firing pin is a hair longer than the inner part that stikes the cartridge.

Looking at the barrel/receiver I see a very nice clean indentation where the firing pin is striking the barrel face. In short the barrel is getting hit harder than the cartridge.

I'm thinking about taking apart the bolt and evening the firing pin so the cartridge is at least getting hit the same time and the same strength as the barrel face.

Other than than I'm thinking a stronger firing pin or sending it back to Savage.

Any other ideas?

Here is pic of the striker up against a straight edge. Red arrow points to the part that actual strikes the rim of the cartridge. You can see that the upper part protrudes farther than the lower which would prevent the striker from fully engaging the rim of the cartridge. I'm thinking about gently filing it flat and see if that helps with my misfires.

I flat polished the stiker sides and edges out to 2500grit to see if that helps it move smoother. I also end polished the striker so it does not go past the bolt face. I squared it up so the rim of the cartridge will get better impact from the striker. I've cleaned up the grove in the bolt where the striker resides.

I'll test fire it this week at the range to see if that helps and post the results.

Shot in the dark here. You are using hornady brand ammunition? I had to set a 17 barrel back with a modified go gauge set to hornady rim thickness.

I've been using winchester and hornady. The winchester misfires about 50% of the time. Hornady was fine, but not its also misfiring about 1-in10.

I'm hoping reworking the striker will help. I'll post back the results after I hit the range later this week.
