Light bullets in 1:8 twist for 6mm BR

For 300 meter prone competition I am currently using either the 105 grs Lapua and the 105 Berger VLD,both moly) bullets. My gun is in 6mmBR and sports a Shilen Select Match grade barrel with a 1 in 8 twist.

As I understand that these heavier bullets will only fully stabilize beyond 150 yards, I would like to use lighter bullets for smaller matches and practice sessions at 100 meters.

Could I use lighter bullets in the same rifle and get good results or should I stick with the 300 m combo?

Suggestions and loads would be very welcome.

In our experience, when shot at 2830 FPS or faster the 105s will stabilize just fine at short distances--even at 50m. Enough to print 0.13" groups at 50m at least.

That said, going to a lighter, flat-based bullet such as the BIB 95 will probably give you a little more raw accuracy inside 300m. German Salazar recently tested the BIB 95s at 200 yards and the results were better than his 105gr match load, comparing multiple 10-shot groups. If your range is pretty windy, it might be better to stick with the high-BC 105s/107s, but in calm conditions, the FB should provide a slight edge--but we're only taking about maybe 1/8th" difference at 100 yards.

I shoot the same barrel and twist in my 6BR and use the 105 Berger, naked) for 300 meters. I have also had very good results with their 80, 90 and 95 grain bullets. For really short distances, less than 100yds I'd be inclined to go with the 80 grain. Beyond 100 and up to 200 I'd go with the 90 or 95, whichever produces the best groups. Actually, the 95 grain in fairly calm winds will do as good at the 105 at 300 yds.
