Leupold Scope Question

I am building a 6mm br gun and looking for a good quality scope to put on it, but don't want to break the bank. Gun will be used from 100-600 yards. I was looking at the Leupold FX-III 30x40mm Ajd. Obj. Silhouette scope. Any opinions on this scope for bench rest or is their a better option. Thanks Alan

Alan, The only drawback to a straight fixed power scope is if mirage is moving much you would have no way to bump the power back. I think if I were going with a fixed power scope, 20X is about tops. However, I do like having the higher powered scopes for the "good times" that do appear on certain days. I hope this helps. Bill

I use many different scopes on my 6BR's but I have a Weaver T-36 fixed power that I use one one and I love it. In my humble opinion, for off the bench shooting to 600, I would not like using only a 20X scope. T-36's are often for sale for around $350 on this site. My preference is the 1/8 moa dot.

Billmo's comments are certainly valid and mirage *can* affect the ease of use with a higher magnification, but mirage can also be your friend for reading conditions.

I have a Nightforce 12-42X56 and even in substantial mirage I dial it back to 30-35X. I am finding my Leupold 8.5-25X50's aren't "doing it for me" at 600-1000 yards anymore, having been spoiled with higher powered scopes
