Leupold Competition Series

For all those out there who have the above Leupold scope(s), in 35,40 or 45x, do you have any comments about the turret zero reference adjustments? I bought a new 40x last month, great scope, so impressed with it, just ordered another. But, after sighting-in and attempting to re-set the turret zero reference opened a can of worms. Loosened the T-15 torx screw, while holding the turret down, turret turned & was set at zero, slowly tightened the T-15 screw and the screw began giving the same clicks while the turret turned freely, no clicks. Finally hit that magic spot where the clicks returned to the turrets, screw firmly in place. Fired one shot and point of impact was 18" low. O.K., now we can start all over, wasting ammo & barrel life. Called the Leupold tech rep & he admitted the adjustments are a problem, and he also experienced much the same troubles as I did. Tried again ( I like things to be "right"), and had the same results, gave up & am using the colored paint dots for elevation settings at 1,2 & 300 yards. Leupold does not supply any info in the owners manual on the proper way to re-set the turrets. Can anybody out there point me (and others, I can't believe I'm the only one having these problems) in the right direction? ???

Frank, Big Bruce has the same scope on his 6BR, and saturday he was showing me the turret and explaining how he didn't like the setup as well. I don't know if he figured it out. Maybe shoot him a PM? I did look thru his scope and have to admit they have a winner with the glass though. Its a 35 power.

Dave: Thanks, I needed that support. I also e-mailed leupold explaining my problems, and they have never responded. I think they know it's a poor design, and would like to ignore the issue hoping it will just go away, but for their cost, I'm not going to be that forgiving. My Weaver T-24x's, and a Zeiss have a simple screw on top: loosen turn the turret, tighten, done. The NF's and the older Leupold's with the 3 socket set screws are also a good, simple design. I'll be looking forward to your friends response. Thanks Frank

Loosen the torx screw on top of the knobs only just enough so that you can turn the turret without it clicking. Maybe 1/2 to 1 turn. Careful, if you loosen the screw too much it'll cause the turret to pop out of the slot it rides in. Now set it to zero and tighten it back in. Turn it some to be sure it is clicking. If it is not clicking you turned it out too far and should take the turret off all the way and have a look inside to see how it works before you align the slot back up.

Don't know why Leupold doesn't give better instructions on how to do adjust this. I know 2 guys that sent their scopes back because they couldn't figure out what happened and I've fixed 3 other guy's scopes at matches that didn't know what was going on. Once you see how it works it is simple.

i also have a 45X...
ok under the torx screw is a slotted washer that mates with adjustment head once the you loosen the screw enough to zero the numbers while Pushing the knob all the way down Turn the washer till it drops in place with the adjuster... then you can re tighten the torx screw---- hope this will some... :)

i admit i had trouble the first time too.. but i then took it apart to see what i was dealing with.. i find it pretty easy now that i know how it tic's

RichG: Yes, I took it apart, saw the spring, plastic slotted part, etc. Lined up the zero with the hash mark and slowly tightened the torx screw, stopping about every half turn feeling for the clicks to return to the turret. They never did, but turning the Torx screw produced the clicks that should have been from turning the turret. Kept trying, and the turret bottomed out against the top of the turret housing, unmovable. Of course, when that happens, you lost your zero adjustment. Tried numerous times, gave up, took the scope out of the Burris Sig. rings, packaged it up, called Leupold Tech Service, the guy admitted there are problems, they have had many returns, sent an e-mail with a pre-paid shipping label for UPS & it went back today. When it comes back, and also with the new one I just received today, I will continue to use the colored paint dots for settings at 1,2,300, etc. yards., and will forget about the turret zero. I'd like to talk to the person from leupold who thought up this mess.

Mike: And I just received the newest Competition, another 40x (shows how much I like them, the turret problems notwithstanding), and noted a newly printed and updated owners manual, measures 7 1/4" x 2 5/8" compared to the older ones that are approx. 4" square. The newer one continues to explain how to adjust the socket set screws, the rotating slotted rings, using a screwdriver, etc., but no mention of how to properly adjust the turrets on the Competition models. Way to go Leupold! Somebody in Beaverton Oregon dropped the ball on this one. :(
