Lets talk 6PPC and H322

Frankie,
You should be fine with 322. I don't often disagree with Dusty, but I can tell you that all the PPC shooters in our area in UBR matches are shooting LT 32 (one shoots LT 30). If I had picked up 8 lbs of 322 I would plan to use it. You probably wouldn't gain anything trying to load at the match until you are much more familiar with tuning on the fly. In all the matches in out general area I only know of one shooter who loads at the match and he didn't last time. In the future you might consider a tuner, but not really necessary now. Better to concentrate on the flags. One other thing, ignore the weather forecast :D

Rick
Normally I do LOL but the thought of 6 hours of driving and 100% chance just didn't add up but I know how it normally goes with "the weatherman" ;-)

I have a Hall actioned 6PPC and about 7 lbs of H322, the gun was built by James Messer in 1989 or so (maybe 88) for me, was never shot until about 3 months ago when I decided to get back into benchrest. Looked at my old data and it shows H322 was the load so I purchased 8 lbs but now I read about different powders being more stable (Yes I know I should have done my research BEFORE I bought). Am I going to have to load at the matches to be competitive? Mr. John Beauchamp and I took the gun out yesterday and after working on load I was able to shoot a 64 (UBR) round. I know this won't win but for me and just getting back in I'm really happy with it but what goes on from here? I know most guys that have the 30BR are preloaded but what about the 6PPC guys? When you go to a match you don't have time to load test so what am I missing? Help an old guy out ;-)

There is a LOT of difference between early 2000-2005 and current lots of 322. IF your 322 is the current stuff made in Australia and it says "Extreme" somewhere on the label you should be fine to preload. As with any loaded rounds, Just keep it out of the direct sun and don't let it sit in the vehicle with the windows up and take it out and shoot it.

As far as 322 and LT32... I use and have used both. Each has some good properties. Let your rifle decide which one which to go with.

If you can shoot a 64 in UBR at 100 you'll be Ok, if you can shoot that at 200yds too you'll make everyone's day. Shoot and have fun!! WD

Thank you! I really enjoy the sport and the comradery and of course I like to shoot well.

Remember.....there have been and are big differences lot-to-lot in all the brands. Sometimes the lots are consistant ...sometimes they're not. There have been inconsistances with VV133,LT-32 and just about everything else at one time or another. This is from my own experiences....not hearsay.
Good luck and stay safe

Honestly I don't remember, must not have been too good as I'm using LT32, just under 29 grains in a Borden BRMXD action & Bartlein barrel.

Honestly I have no idea of barrel maker (remember this was back in 88 or 89) I believe it to be a Schneider? as I had a second 6PPC that James built and I had sold and still have a new barrel for it, it is a 14 twist.
All I remember about the barrel is that James told me it was a "gain twist". The gun is strange in that his brass runs 1.510" in length and chambers just fine. Manuals as well as the drawing on Accurate Shooter show the cartridge length at 1.5032".
What reamer would you guess he used~?

6PPC group competitors would preload if they could do well that way, but the vast majority have figured out that for group shooting, with that cartridge they need to be able to adjust their loads as the ambient conditions change during an event. This is not so say that someone might not be able to find a load that can be used preloaded, by making those changes with a tuner, but IMO a lot of testing in all different conditions would be needed to learn how that would work. As far as 322 goes, I have seen some very nice groups shot with it. It may not be the current powder of choice, but if you do a full load exploration, I think that you will find that it can do the job.
