Let's talk 6mm-06

I have a 30"x 1 1/4" full length barrel (1 in 11" twist) on my 6mm -06 springfield. It never gets hot. But I do if I try to pack it very far. Haha.... it weighs in at 27+ lbs.. but what a blast to shoot. I don't call it a nail driver, I call it my finish nailer.

I've had a 6-284, built on a Rem 700 SA, for over 15 years and it is one of my all time best and favorite builds. Mine has a 12tw barrel so I can't shoot the heavy for caliber bullets like the 105's and up but it's a tack driver with 75gr Vmax and puts big nasty holes in coyotes and rock chucks.

I have never had a single feeding issue with my 6-284 and it has been one of the easiest guns to load for of any that I own. Making 6-284 brass from necked down 6.5-284 Lapua brass is a cinch and is a single pass through a FL or bushing die. Lapua brass is exceptional quality and I've yet to throw a single piece away for my 6-284.

The 6-06, 6-284, and 240 Wby all have pretty much the same case capacity and there is certainly nothing wrong with any of the above but IMO the 6-284 is an easier choice with top notch brass and has commercially available load data. The 240Wby would obviously be an easy one too but you'll pay a premium for brass that isn't premium in quality.

whats the speed on that 6x284 with the 75 vmax??? close to 4k??

My load for those 75's is a fairly moderate 51.3gr H4350 seated 10 off and launching them at 3650fps.

I have no doubt I could change powders, stand on it a little harder, and easily pick up a couple hundred fps but I have a couple hundred rounds loaded up with the above load and it shoots that load boringly well in all conditions so I've just never really been to excited about chasing velocity. Coyotes generally don't care if the bullet is traveling 3650 or a couple hundred fps faster. :)

yep...thanks

Just built a 6-06 for long range hogs, coyotes and whitetails. Love it!!! I had a 25-06 and lots of brass already, so the 6-06 was an easy choice. I looked real hard at the 6 Ackley and the 6-284, but I'm a hunter and wanted a reliable feeder and also wasn't real excited about fire forming brass. The 6-06 was an easy plug and play for the long action 25-06. In addition, making 6-06 brass from 25-06 is as easy as running it through a 6-06 sizing die.

As for barrel life. I did lots of research on it and it seems most are getting around 1500 rounds, which should last me many years. The extra powder burned over a 6 Ackley means nothing. Powder is cheap.

If you go 6-06, do a fast twist so you can shoot heavies. Run the numbers on a 105 VLD at 3300 fps. It's an eye opener.

Better yet run a 7 twist barrel and run the 110's ..... now run the numbers that is flat scary..... jim

If it were me and the 6-06 is what I settled on I would set it up so that I could launch the 115s as fast as possible and maximize the potential of all that case capacity. I know the 6XC is absolutely wicked on targets and critters alike with 105s so the 115s at a couple hundred fps faster should be flat out incredible.

A 110 has a BC over .600 they are a little better .... jim

Here’s some action out of something similar, a 240 Wby Magnum. Made in West Germany. It still shoots pretty good although it could probably use a fresh barrel.

Friend and I built 6-280AI s and getting 3300 FPS with 110 MK in 27” and 3400 FPS in 30”. Scarey flat at L/R. Shot them at 1 mile on steel and around 55 MOA with 300 yd zero.
Nice thing is bushing die them down from .284 to .244 in 2-3 steps and no FFing.
They like slow powder with the heavy 6mm bullets. Retumbo to US 869. ( we ve settled on R33 or US869)

I'm assuming that you're packing around 63gns of Retumbo in there. Is the juice worth the squeeze (would you do it over again)? That doesn't seem too far off what a 6mm Remington AI can do with about 50gns of powder- maybe +100fps for the additional powder?

59-60 grs Retumbo, 64-65 of R33 or 67-68 of US869.

I d do it again but I go into these wildcats with my eyes wide open .... kind of like a 525 hp GT350 or is the 760 hp GT500 worth the extra coin.

Different answers for different people. BTW we can push another 100 FPS out of both guns, 3400 FPS in 27” and 3500 FPS in 30” but brass and throat life takes a hit so we back off a little.

I've got 3 6mm-06 improved rifles. Two need new barrels, but one of those is still shooting OK, but round count is unknown on the two.

The rifle that I personally built is a 27" 8t rock creek #5. It shoots very well with 105 A-max's @ 3,250 fps. Holds 1/2 MOA out to 600 yards which is the furthest I've shot it on paper.

Built it for LR coyotes 600+yards and whitetail. Works very well for both. I will always have one, but the two that need barrels will most likely get barreled into other stuff i want.

Barrel life depends on how you treat it. 1500 rounds isn't out of the question. They get hot quick, so if you plan to shoot prairie dogs or several strings at the bench your barrel life will dwindle quickly.

Why would the bullet being in the case farther lead to more barrel life? I understand the buning if you have a lot of free ore. I was just looking to her the base even with the bottom of the neck. The 95gt vld I have are there close but they are .2 shorter to the ogive
Read my post again, you are not building a target rifle but a hunting rifle. Use AA2700, N160, H1000(check the heat index), and consider a 243 AI or 244 AI for magazine constraints with long vld bullets. You do not want to build a single shot, Eh?

I was building 257 Weatherby's and 7 STW's with zero freebore in the early 90's, bug holes abound, fast, accurate, and you can chase the lands for a long time.
