Lesson on straight 6 chev engines.

My great uncle owned a Texaco station in Potter County, PA and made fuel oil deliveries out into the countryside with a 1929 Chevy 6 cylinder tank truck until about 1963. '29 was the first year for the Chev inline 6, and I remember, at age 10 or so, thinking that the '29 six looked almost identical to the sixes in my dad's '47 and '53 Chev sixes, except the '29 had an updraft carb. That one got away; when I was 14 I told him I wanted to buy that truck, but when he retired and sold the station, about 1963, he sold the truck with the station - he hadn't realized I was really serious about wanting that truck. And so ended my effort to have a one tank truck antique truck collection.... but I did have a lot of fun with the '55 Bel Air 6 banger with 3 on the tree that got me through high school.

Not only is pouring babbit for the older engines pretty much a lost art, there are very few people out there that know what a bearing scraper is, or how one is used to fit those poured babbit bearings to the crank. The last time I used a bearing scraper was about 1968.

Fun thread; it has brought back a lot of memories.

Owned a 1968 C10 2wd chevy pickup with a 250 inline six it was a good reliable motor. I remember back in 1983 or 84 ? we got a cold snap here in western Md. with nighttime temps down to 10 to 20 below, that old truck was the only thing that would start on the block, it had 187k on it when I sold it. Also I owned a '74 Plymouth Valiant with the slant six , sold it with about 70k on the odometer to a neighbors son who was going into the marines. He drove it back and forth from base and put an additional 150k on that car before it gave up the ghost. I miss those days now and again. Ron...

a 6 Cly Chev w/ duals winding out was a sound to behold..had one that would rattle the windows at a point in 2nd gear..moved on and built a jeepalac and then a 50 fordalac..a 49 jeepster w/ a 53 caddy w/ the hydramatic..and a 50 for coup w a 53 caddy and a la sale trans..problem w/ both was hook up...you got more out it of running from a roll

Kids today have no clue. My brother had a old be lair with a 6 and 3 on the tree. I all so went with a gal that had a dart with I think a 235 you could not kill she did her best. I remember very well asking her how the oil was one time. Oil? she asked what about it. She didn't even know where to check it. Good times though. that dart would do way over 100 and would crusz 75 without too much gas. But hell gas was 69 cent a gallon or something like that. I know many of you got it for a lot less.

Great thread....

Butch:

My little 219 inch flat six is making between 491 and 513 bhp, depending upon how I massage the keys on my laptop when I enter the program into the brain.

Oh, an old man moment. I thought we were talking 6 cyl flat head engines, not 6 cyl flat[boxer] motor.
Is it similar to this old motor of mine?

Similar Butch. Mine has the 9 quart dry sump oil system from the factory. It's basically a race car wearing a license plate. Factory RPM redline was 8500. With the re-flashing of the PCM, it SAFELY hits 9200. At freeway speeds ::) I am getting about 25 mpg. My best 0-65 time is 3.4 seconds, and she weighs in at just over 3200 pounds. Top speed you probably wouldn't believe.

All 911s had dry sump oiling. They are a really a sweet engine.
You are correct of course Butch. What I should have said, is this particular engine has the more sophisticated 4 pump scavenging system used in the factory race cars. It was one of the options available when you order the GT3.

My first vehicle was a 64 Chevy short wide box pickup with a 292. It was a 80k mile no rust truck, but the engine was not so nice. It was a local farm pickup, that had not seen much pavement, or oil changing. The carb accelerator pump did not work well, so to help start on those -20 days, he drilled a 1/4" hole in the oil bath air cleaner, right above the carb to pour gas in. When we got it home my dad dumped in 2 gallons of diesel fuel and let it idle for 1/2 hour. We did that twice and got out an ungodly amount of crap. After about a year we put in a targetmaster 350 as the 292 would take from 1-2 quarts of oil per 26 mile round trip to school! As a side and sick note, a local bought a rust free early Firebird with the OHC 4 barrel L6 and pulled the engine and put it on Craigslist. It was on there for $200 for more than a month. What would a 4 speed 4 barrel OHC Firebird be worth compared to a small block Chevy powered Firebird?????? Oh well.

RMulhern,
Yes this is a rifle and shooting forum, but this thread is on Chevrolet 6 cylinder engines because were sick of all the political and classified add bashing so were just having fun, you got a neet story about one of your first cars or neat engine you have worked on? I my self would love to hear it.
Wayne.

I've owned a couple of cars that I wish I would have shot with a rifle, it would have ended their misery and mine quickly ! ;D Hope this is in keeping with the intent of this forum LOL.

Not me but Dad was on the crew for a Hudson Hornet running on dirt. Drove it to, raced, and from the track! Spoke of Lee Petty, Bud Baker and all the Grand Pappies of the current bunch. I'm from the '60's and '70's muscle car era! ;D My personal favorite was a '69 Dodge Super Bee!

Restoring old trucks has been my main hobby for years. My daughter in law called awhile back wanting to store her "new" car in my shop....a 1970 Super Bee she inherited from her grandfather!

Now I have to learn to speak Chrysler...

just for a minute, i thought this was the forum on HOT ROD magazine & i would mention my first car ( 1958 chevy impala-348-factory 3 dueces) but then i remembered this is accurate shooter where we talk about guns & how to make them better or where to buy the best components & ask for a little help sometimes. So pleeeeeze try to get back on tract with guns;;;;;;;;;; have a great day Craig
