It is interesting. Albeit, I AM a chemist.

In layman's terms, as most on here are saying, in water it is citric acid. As a solid, it is not EXACTLY citric acid.

So does that make it the same stuff in the food grade citric acid packages?
 
Not sure what's exactly in food grade citric acid packages, but if they are 100 percent CA, then for cleaning brass, it will be the same.
