Left Side Ejection port

Ok fellas you can call me STUPID if you want but please tell me what is the advantage of having the ejection port on the left side of the action.
As you can tell I dont get out much!!!!!

Benchrest shooters need to get their shots downrange fast, to get the same wind condition.

They load on the left side with their "free" hand while the ejector throws the fired cases out the right side. Strictly left port only rifles? Same idea. Run the bolt with your right hand, feed new cases with the left.

+2 on that and it looks cool too.

I find the left port more convenient when PD shooting from a bench/table. Everything seems to work better, more coordinated.

Right hand shooters don't have to lean over the gun to see/access the port. Much more convenient from all postions. The two handed operation works too! ;)

For a right handed shooter off a bench, having a port on the left side is the best. For me I didn't even have to get used to it as it seems like the natural thing to do. I found I didn't like to run the bolt and load on the same side.

My last rifle was a left port load with a right port eject. It is okay, and for speed it is the way to go. Since I don't have to shoot fast, and have quite a bit of dexterity in my fingers, I actually like my left port, left eject without the ejector the best. That way I don't eject my thin necked brass off the bench and ding up the necks, which seems to happen if you eject out the left side.

I usually use a right port, no ejector in F-Class, both Open and T/R. But, we shoot relatively slowly while waiting for pit service. The one exception is my Viper SS Drop Port that gently drops the cases out the bottom. If you put a little cup there, they never touch the bench or mat. :)

Consider a "left hand" action. The "free" left hand (If you're right handed) works the bolt and feeds ammo while your right hand stays on and holds the stock.
Right hand thumbhole stock fitted with a left hand action. 8) 8)
After shooting a lefty right handed, it's hard to go back to a righty. ;)

I like the left port so well I have even built a couple of hunting rifles with them, I probably will never buy another right port to build a rifle on again.
Wayne.

The biggest advantage to the left port, for a RH shooter, is, it provides an unobstructed path for hot gas & particles of molten brass to reach the shooters eyes and face, in the event of a ruptured case.

That way you know immediately that you've pop'ed a primer! :)

Thats a very interesting question...I was waiting for it to come....lets develop it.

OK, let's. How many otherwise intelligent shooters do you know that don't wear eye protection? And while we are at it, what about the ranges, events, and national organizations that do not draw a clear line, by requiring it? I will leave it at that, given that a fully developed rant would probably set some kind of a record.

Well, of course you are correct, Boyd. Any prudent shooter wears safety glasses. But, I don't want a piece of brass embedded in my cheek or nose, either. ;) [br]
This is really only a theoretical problem with a Remington-style, 2 lug design. With a Savage 2 lug, BAT 3 lug, or any design where the raceway is blocked or there is no lug raceway, there is no problem. Even with a Remington, if the bolt nose is fitted correctly, it should not be an issue.

R.G.C., what question are you referring to?

Boyd, safety rules and shooting glasses may help but I, personally, would rather not have any of my face exposed to that kind of pressure and heat.

sleepygator, having had a case separation, in a Rem 700, I can attest to the design of the Rem being very safe. I'm very thankful that my rifle was a RBRP and I'll leave it at that.

No rant. Just opinion.

Thanks guys For the info provided it all makes a bit more sence now.

But am I reading correctly that some of you think that a left side eject port is dangerous to a right handed shooter?????????

Playing with guns as well as getting out of bed in the morning can be dangerous! Life in general can be hazardous to your health. Don't get out of bed or play with guns. Don't drink the water or breath the air and you should be safe? ::) ;)
You're only going around one time (unless you're Shirley Mc Lane) so you better have fun while you're doing it. ;D

Of course it is. So is drag racing. I feel more confident with a custom action in a left port than one mass produced by the factory.
