Left Side Ejection port

For me it's not the question of whether the action is mass produced at a factory or, custom. The issue for me is that the port on a left port action is positioned, for a right hand shooter, just in front of your face. The port is the most readily accesable escape route for hot gases in the event of a case failure.

Has anyone actually seen a custom BR action come apart? I have not but I have seen factory actions fail from bad loading. Is it because we are more anal with our loading?

I shoot a right port on a left bolt action, left handed, so the port is in front of my face, and I have shot a lot of factory right right actions, left handed. My point is that, particularly in the case of actions with the port in front of your face, eye protection is advisable. On the other hand, I would not want to create the impression that having the port on the other side means that your eyes are safe. I have seen the aftermath of more than one severe case failure. Luckily, the shooters were wearing eye protection, because it was quite evident from the pattern of little cuts on their faces that if they had not been, that one or both eyes would have been severely damaged. Frankly, I think that it is fortunate for some of you that no one has made a big deal out of not wearing burlap underwear, or there would be a lot of shooters walking funny.

R.G.C., what question are you referring to?

Boyd, safety rules and shooting glasses may help but I, personally, would rather not have any of my face exposed to that kind of pressure and heat.

sleepygator, having had a case separation, in a Rem 700, I can attest to the design of the Rem being very safe. I'm very thankful that my rifle was a RBRP and I'll leave it at that.

No rant. Just opinion.

Sorry, mt fault. It was the question below with my comment.

Has anyone evaluated the relative strength, and rigidity of the action(s) with that much metal removed on both sides?

Well, it is obvious that cutting an at least 60°-70° part of the receiver section simply reduces rigidity.
The problem is the thin section of metal remaining at too between the 2 openings and on which abuts the upper lug while the lower one is supported by a strong section.
3 lugs depends on the lugs arrangement.
This weakening is not too much of a problem with small calibres, but the concern increase with hot and larger calibres.
Only solution for a sufficiently strong and rigid 2 windows action is to icrease the receiver diameter for instance from 1.350’ to 1.500’ .

One of my first semi-custom rifles was built on a Savage target RBLP action, and I was a little reluctant ordering it but was amazed how functional it is!
