Learning to shoot with wind flags

Match ammo lots aren't perfect simply because they are "match ammo". Wind aside, not all lots of .22LR match ammo will populated with rounds that have equal trajectories, with equally predictable POIs.

If some lots may be nearer to being perfect, the average lot isn't. Shooters often shoot these average lots, not because they are great, but because these are the ones most commonly available. Wind aside, the much often harder-to-find truly great lots will perform much more uniformly and as expected.

As an aside, you shouldn't take on the lone responsibility of policing what I say. Leave something for others who may feel it's needed. ;)
There is no thing as perfect in rimfire ammo.

Holding to long lets the wax get hard in the barrel. You'll have to shoot a couple sighters to warm it back up.
and by then the conditions may have changed on you again.
If you're shooting Lapua product, there is no wax. Aside from that, over all the primary barrels I have had, IME it's more dependent on the specific barrel as to how long one will hold. Example, the barrel on my primary 10.5 rifle will hold a very long time. Recently at a match I was running after we finished a card I went down range to hang my next one and collect the others for scoring. We then scored those cards (10 of them between 4 scorers) and then I called the line. Probably 15-20 minutes before I shot the rifle again (I did not clean between the cards) and my first 2 sighters went exactly where they were going before. Not all my barrels will do that, but a couple will. Also of note, the barrels I have that will do that, are the best barrels I own, and that is not a coincidence.

BTW: I shoot Eley, which does have wax in the lube.

My question for more experienced. Those small flags that you put on your bench any help or a waste ? Thanks
I personally don’t use a wind flag on bench, I feel that it’s just another thing to carry around and set up.

What I do use is the melon between my shoulders as my wind flag while I’m on the bench. Being bald has its advantages !!

When wind is not involved -- which is the situation to which I referred -- it remains true, technically or otherwise. When wind is involved the trajectory is subject to it's influence and of course flags will dictate. No one should think differently.

Most lots are not above average. On average, the average competitive shooter shoots average lots. While some average shooters have above average lots most can't get them. When lots are imperfect, trajectories can become more unpredictable with the addition of wind.

Since you feel compelled to follow and try to correct what I say (for this reason I don't miss you on RFC, but it's clear you still read there) I won't be revisiting this thread.
Glen,

This is why I point out you dribble on the forums. how do you know this in bold quote, do you compete? how many matches have you won shooting against average shooters with their average lots of ammo? what is an average shooter or lot?
I know you are way up North, but I pointed out before you want to be believable on these statements as an example above in bold go shoot the SN online matches and post your scores. but don't come to the forums and tell us why this is the way it is if you haven't been there yourself. here is a goal, I do believe I still have the high score for the mini-Palma 200-17X @ 100yds. shoot a 20019X to make a believer of what you post.

As far as RFC I go there occasionally when someone PM's me or emails me otherwise I have no interest on what goes on there.

Okay, I'll help Lee out and take the load off him a little since you have invited others "who may feel it's needed" because it's needed alright!
I have read the content of a LOT of your posts and you have no idea about real world high level RFBR competition. Many people who have very good pedigrees in sanctioned RFBR feel the same. What exactly your experience is, is a mystery.

Thanks Scott, ole Glen there he sure set himself up for that rebuttal!

Can't imagine shooting without the bench flag. We have used a bench flag
since 2018.
Todd
I have been using one for several years now and it definitely helps. Often the bench flag and my first flag, which I run very close to the bench will show opposite direction. When that happens I either shoot a sighter or just wait for it to come in line with the others.

Thanks Scott, ole Glen there he sure set himself up for that rebuttal!

Hey Lee,
Yes he did sir! I have wanted to say something about the guy for a long time and resisted. BUT, since he invited others to join the fray, well, you know!
