Lead removal cloth?

I recently received a Birchwood Casey lead removal/polishing cloth. It's not the same as I remember. This is a small white colored cloth but I seem to remember that the one I used long ago was bigger, yellowish and seemed to be impregnated with something. The older worked real good at taking some lead out of a Ruger .22 that leaded real bad with some Remington Thunderbolt .22s.

I cut a patch with the new cloth to clean my 1911 barrel that sees mostly lead ammo. First I cleaned it with solvent and brush till patches came out clean. I ran the lead cloth on a tight jag back and forth and it came out black with a couple slivers of lead.

Seemed to clean the barrel and chamber fairly well. There was a couple places on the lands near the chamber where I could see some leading. I then ran a patch with some solvent and it came out dirty. After I cleaned it I then tried some JB bore paste. As it is with JB the patch came out black and after some back and forth the leading I could see was gone.

At his point the barrel looked clean and shiny....until I ran another patch of lead removal cloth and it came out black. So what is going on? Is the lead removal cloth getting black like with JB bore paste or is it removing carbon that solvent and JB isn't getting?

I still need to run it through some of my other stainless barrels to see how that goes. Pictures I see on the internet show the 2 different colored cloths from B/C so I don't know if the other kind is still made or just older pictures. Anybody get one lately?

Thunderbolts leaded a Sig 22 conversion unit so bad it quit shooting. When I cleaned it lead came out in strips. I never got all the lead out till I used SharpShoot-R lead out. Worked better than any solvent for lead I’ve used.

UHMMMM the old thunderbolts... They will absolutely screw up a barrel.... I have 2bricks of them and I have been trying to decide if I want to even shoot them.... It's hard not to in this climate but I know exactly what will happen.... How hard was this stuff to use..???? I probably need to get some....

Funny story about the Thunderbolts. My best friend gave me the brick of .22s as a get well present after some surgery. Well I had sheets of lead building up in the bore of my Ruger pistol from shooting the Thunderbolts. I told my freind if I ever get surgery again just punch me where they cut me open instead of buying me more crappy .22s!

Just wet patches with a 20 minute soak, brushing not needed. I only used it on the Sig 22 barrel which was badly leaded and after a few soaks I couldn’t see any lead and the rifling was more visible than before.
If you use it follow the instructions…….

Give those Thunderbolts to someone you don’t like

The Ultimate in removing lead from a pistol barrel is Outers FoulOut.
I shot a few 45 Wad guns in bullseye for years, even the best bullets leaded the first 2-3 inches after a couple hundred rounds.
The FoulOut unit electronically reverse plates the lead from the barrel to a stainless rod. 100% of the lead removed in 10 minutes without touching the bore.
Sadly it’s discontinued.

I know there's instructions for a home made version, may have to look it up.

Lol , when my dad passed he had about 5-6 bricks of them.... When I went to collect the ammo I took them and over the years give them away to people who ask for ammo during these tough times.... I do tell them to clean the gun very well after shooting.... I would bet you money they don't and that's one of the reasons they never have ammo either...beggers can't be choosers I guess...

Kind of interesting. It appears that Amazon is advertising the original yellow cloth:

This product works. I have used it to resurrect old .22's, particularly the old model 60's
that I have such an affinity for. Follow instructions and be patient.
