So anymore it seems like I can not read about any rifle with out it having a 5R barrel. I guess that is supposed to be code for "it must be accurate" or "sniper grade" or something? DO keep in mind guys that 5R is kind of the American take on what is normal rifling to the former CCCP aka USSR the same used on AK-47's and Dragunovs as I understand it.
To listen to the OEM's tell it and the gun writers tell it you would think this magically guarantee's that you will have a 1 MOA or better shooting rifle. Sadly a poorly made 5R rifled barrel will not shoot or clean up any better than any other poorly made barrel from Microgroove to Ballard type to Pope Gain Twist. Does not matter if it is cut rifled, button rifled, broached take your pick it is either a well made barrel and a shooter or it's not.
I am so tired of seeing 5R it is like a song on the radio that is being over played by radio stations, the shopping mall and your friends no matter how great the song at some point you never want to hear it again.
Buzz Words, Proprietary Cartridges with Unobtainable Brass, and the endless pursuit of ever cheaper rifle designs with ever increasing prices in spite of it is killing the industry.
That's my rant for the month!
P.S. I wonder how Hart, Shilen, Lija, Douglas, Brux and the rest ever managed before 5R?
