So anymore it seems like I can not read about any rifle with out it having a 5R barrel. I guess that is supposed to be code for "it must be accurate" or "sniper grade" or something? DO keep in mind guys that 5R is kind of the American take on what is normal rifling to the former CCCP aka USSR the same used on AK-47's and Dragunovs as I understand it.

To listen to the OEM's tell it and the gun writers tell it you would think this magically guarantee's that you will have a 1 MOA or better shooting rifle. Sadly a poorly made 5R rifled barrel will not shoot or clean up any better than any other poorly made barrel from Microgroove to Ballard type to Pope Gain Twist. Does not matter if it is cut rifled, button rifled, broached take your pick it is either a well made barrel and a shooter or it's not.

I am so tired of seeing 5R it is like a song on the radio that is being over played by radio stations, the shopping mall and your friends no matter how great the song at some point you never want to hear it again.

Buzz Words, Proprietary Cartridges with Unobtainable Brass, and the endless pursuit of ever cheaper rifle designs with ever increasing prices in spite of it is killing the industry.

That's my rant for the month!

P.S. I wonder how Hart, Shilen, Lija, Douglas, Brux and the rest ever managed before 5R?

I thought the notion was that an odd number of lands resulted in minimal circumferential overlap (never being displaced 180 degrees from one another), that being less stressful on the bullet jacket? Nonetheless, poorly made is problematic!

Tell us more !

I don't understand the "do my part". Some times when shooting you try to hit the target and some times you don't?????? what do you do the when you don't try to hit the target use your bump stock and do rapid fire strins and pretend you have a machine gun.

If you shot competitively you would understand what that means. We all make mistakes when they say commence fire, and make split second decisions that sometimes come back to bite you. Your bench mannerisms mean so much. I've watched some go into a "panick mode" and you know how bad they did before you see the target.

Also, I have only bought and shot 5r rifled barrel since I started into competition. I see no reason to change. I'm sorry that bothers some of you. I didnt realize it was such a catch phrase. I thought it was just the type of rifling my barrel had.

Mauser284 What makes you think that all barrels are equal? Boots Obermeyer makes some great shooting barrels. He was the one that started the ball rolling. So if you got a bad barrel welcome to the club. Your just going to have to be like most of us poor guys that can't run out and buy another cause this one won't shoot. Make it shoot the best you can!

5 lands, 4 lands, or 3 lands. Not really sure it makes a difference. 1976 I bought a new in box/crate 1903 rifle for $15. Well it was actually in a box from an Arsenal and covered in cosmoline. It had only 2 lands. Shot under an inch with 168's. Fast forward to 2016. Bought a new match barrel from a vender in Wisconsin, would barely do an MOA with an 25X scope and many, many test loads. Sometimes it's a good barrel and sometimes not.

Thanks Joe ...
I would like to add ( It's sad that Boots had a Stroke ). I f He hadn't this post may have put Him on the road ?

More Fact : 5R by Obermeyer ( Boots ) is His Registered 5R … Not all 5R's are equal or the same .
Krieger is licensed to make Boot's 5R Barrels .

Why did Obermeyer get most all Government Barrel Contracts ?
