Lathe turning Pins out of a pin set

Hello,
I'm using Pins out of a gage pin set for expanding Brass necks and was needing to know what type of Carbide insert will cut the pin just to taper the end on a lathe.

Gage pins are somewhere around 60 Rockwell c so you would want to look for a CBN tipped insert for your favorite turning tool. Then use your compound to turn the taper. Good luck...

Carbide will cut fine...cemented or indexable carbide will work. Swing your compound to the angle and goto town. Same insert you would use for turning.

Carbide will cut hardened steel but it is difficult to take a light cut without chatter. For what you describe, a 30 second operation with a tool post grinder would be the best. You could probably put the pin in a collet and spin it fast and hit it gently with a quality hand held rotary grinder. --Jerry

883 carbide , or borazon insert should do what you want. If you want something simple,Chuck the pin in a cordless drill and use a belt sander or a fine grit wheel on bench grinder.

I recently machined out a hardened bearing race for a neighbor--created a beautiful 5 gallon bucket full of indigo blue peacock swarf--but it took forever. --Jerry

The OP is trying to make a useable tool, you were just making scrap to get a worn out bearing race out of its pocket!

Buy yourself a ceramic insert and keep it handy for times you need to turn hard metals. A good carbide would have done it, but ceramic rocks. Run it as fast as your lathe will turn and watch the cellophane thick chips fly.
