Lathe Question

Got quite a bit of grease off of it. Still a ways to go. Currently the cross slide is off and some of the parts are soaking. Today I remounted it to the stand with a brass washer to seal since the bolts go through the chip pan which gets oil in it.

So I ran power over to it, started it up and thought the motor hum was a lot louder than I expected. Ran about a minute and blew a capacitor. Took the motor JB cover off and it has quite a bit of oil in it. Can't tell if capacitors have been replaced recently or not.

Maybe just needs capacitors but may be better off with a new motor. 2hp Taiwanese motor from 1988. 24mm shaft, CNS C113, I'm not sure what that means. Found a similar modern motor from Precision Mathews that says frame is 90S or 90L.....any recommendations? PM says their motor is made by Baldor but is a bit pricey for what I have in this lathe...maybe a smooth motor is worth it.

Update. Figured out the guy I bought it from must have recently replaced the capacitors. He is a young guy, navy mechanic...must have figured 125V rating was close enough to 240....just ordered 2 proper capacitors.

motor vibrates a bit more than I would like. Quite a bit of it is belt alignment but with the belt off there is still some vibration. I may take it apart and replace the bearings...or maybe I should just find a new motor.

I inherited a 1980 jet 1340 with a 3hp 220 motor that my dad had never hooked to power. When I finally did hook it up , The motor kept having centrifugal switch and capacitor issues which would ground out through the bearings. I eventually went with a new 3-phase and a vfd and never looked back.. in my research of that era of Jet lathes a lot of people complained about the original Motors. Good luck with yours

good advice. i also have 3ph power in my garage for my other lathe, grinder, and bridgeport. If I buy a new motor 3ph would be an option. However, going VFD would help with resale value since I could sell the VFD with it. --Jerry

Single-phase motors have torsional vibration that cannot be eliminated. That's why they are often in rubber mounts to dampen the noise. 3-phase motors do not have torsional vibration. A lathe with a 3-phase motor and a VFD is an order of magnitude more convenient and versatile to use.

Update:
1. I have obtained a good quality digital copy of the original Jet manual. Anybody wants one send me a PM with your email address.
2 Working a lot, not a lot of progress cleaning it up.
3. Oil seals need replacing and one bearing seems awfully tight. I'm going to pull the spindle and replace seals and bearings. Not very expensive in one of these old guys.
4. While I have the spindle out, I'm going to toy with the idea of making a new spindle for it that is D1-4.
