Lathe spindle question

My lathe is a poor man's special------a Grizzly.

Many Grizzly's are equipped with an internal MT-5 taper at the chuck end of the spindle.

Is this internal taper common on other brands of lathes ?

Any comments will be appreciated.

It varies depending on size of spindle bore, manufacture and to some extent the time frame the lathe was manufactured in.

Yessir it is fairly common I believe, at least on Asian lathes...my PM1340 has the same configuration. You have an mt3 adapter for turning on center with a dog, yes?

Yessir Ramblerman, the unit came with the MT3 adapter and a couple of dead centers.

Haven't measured the runout on these centers but it is a handy feature.

My south bend lathe has a #3 MT in the spindle ....... this is for putting a center in the headstock end of the machine so you can turn between centers

Only on some small 2nd op machines are the spindles bored with out a taper

Almost all of the newer machines have one size or another of a Morse Taper. You don't see much of the Brown & Sharp or Jarno tapers unless you have a machine from the 1950's and before. Pratt & Whitney used a #6 Jarno taper and collets for those machines were proprietary. Many of the manufacturers did this for one reason or another, but today they seem to have standardized most machines for the Morse taper.
