Lathe is here!!!

Yesterday around 4:00 pm the driver for UPS pulls into my drive and backs up to the garage and we proceed to unload the the crate the lathe is in.

The top 2 boxes are the stand ends, which are constructed of welded steel not some sheet metal that's been formed.

After roughly 2 hrs of dissembling the crate and trying to figure out how to lift the lathe onto the base without damaging the scale for the DRO, I finally got it mounted and bolted down. All that's left is getting a friend over to wire it in and hooking up the foot brake, and getting some pads and making sure it's completely level. First impressions is its heavy for a small lathe, the Gibs seem to be snug and doesn't appear to be any backlash. The fit and finish is well done no misalignments of the castings and no gouges in the paint. The scale was pre installed and the top was threaded for the mount for the readout so all I had to do was bolt it down and mount the DRO.

After wrestling getting it set and lined up to bolt to the stand I was whooped. So I didn't do much after that. I have to find some pads with jack screws to install in the base to level it still. I'm sure that'll be a chore to do.

Congrats, I am sure you will enjoy the new lathe. Now that you have it you won't know how you ever lived without it. Keep us posted on how things go with your new machine.

image.jpeg James check enco for there machinery pads. I believe they are Mason industry's. Hope you have a ball with your new lathe. Now you'll start looking at milling machines

Make some pads. You have the perfect tool for the job. And it will give you a chance to get use to it.

I got the best deal on those Mason Pads lately from MSC. Watch for their sales. They usually have them every few days like enco-- Congats on the new lathe.

Shim it to level (no twist in the ways) and lag it to the floor. Move pic of the Brittney, 'cause he doesn't want 'stuff' splattered on him.

Nice!! If you don't mind me asking just what did that cost you?

4258.00 delivered with upgraded four jaw Chuck and DRO. It also comes with a foot brake that I've not installed a quick change tool post with five holders live center drill Chuck a back plate and the 3 jaw Chuck.

Hopefully I will be able to afford one in the future. Good luck I hope you enjoy it.

At 6'2" I didn't like bending over so much working on my lathe so I turned 5" dia aluminum cylinders about 4" tall as spacers. Recessed the bottoms with a 1/4" bearing surface on the outside bottoms and placed on dense rubber matting for stability and a little vibration control. With the lathe 'lifted' that 4" it is much more convenient and comfortable while operating. Cheaper would be to just pour another concrete pad on top of the floor I suppose and lag to that to add mass....may have to do that in the future I suppose.

Matt, I don't know if you know the Pumpkin"Don Nielson". He suggested to me to saw out the length of the lathe and back 30" and put a runway about 5" deep. Always a clown.
