Large shank Savage pitch diameters

In this diameter range, I like to subtract .002-.003 from the major diameter. Then I polish the top of the threads resulting in about .004 below nominal. Savage 1.055 x 16 is an exception.

This is before I went CNC and full profile inserts. I went -.005" to .007" It's not a hard number. What that does beside give you clearance on the crest is it leaves a very narrow flat on the crest. On trued 700's that I did, without checking the fit, I could thread to within two passes of final PD just by observing the width of the flat. To some degree I still do that when entering and adjusting the minor diameter for new thread specs on my Haas. I look at the flat as I approach final depth. The minor diameter input, in this case, controls the PD.
