Lapua vs Berger Bullets?

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
Berger 185 Juggs are seldom available and they're currently $70/100.
Wondering about Lapua Scenar 185.
They're at $55/100 and available. I read the Cortina shoots Lapua bullets, but that's probably because he's sponsored by them and gets them free. There was a time when he pushed Bergers.

Any experience with 185 Scenars?

seems like the 185 jugs have been available for a while now?

I have not used the 30-cal 185gr Lapuas. I can tell you that the 6mm Lapua Scenars have been superb in my 6mmBR and 6 BRDX rifles. The 6mm Lapua bullets were extremely consistent in weight and base to ogive measurement -- ULTRA consistent, and they shot very small groups.

Yup.
Not that long ago, we used to wait around on the slow boat from Australia to bring us Varget and H4350 once a year.

Lately, these have been generally available the whole year.

If we didn't buy those when they arrived, we generally waited a whole year to see them again... yet things we used to have regular production rotation cycles and access to are now unobtanium.

Strange days indeed.

Until you look for 100 count. Notice that those you've posted are 500 ct.

I have the 185 scenars in my lineup for my sniper platform. I have had very good success with them in front of Vit. N140 powder, Fed 210M primer running 2650fps down an Obermeyer 24" tube. A while back I used that rifle in two 600 yd F/Tr club matches and placed second both times. Harris bipod and rear squeeze bag. I cannopt speak for how they might run down your barrel but they work great for me.

The arguments about Juggernauts not being available or costing too much simply don't fly. If one is willing to spend the time looking, they're available for well under $70 per 100 count box as @newbieshooter has shown above. The fact is, the 185 Scenar is not a new bullet design. As such, it has not been optimized to the extent of newer designs. It has basically the same BC as a 175 Sierra Matchking. Don't get me wrong, nothing would please me more than if all the F-TR shooters I competed against used 185 Scenars. But the real question is, why not just run 175 Matchkings at a higher velocity? Performance would likely be similar to the 185 Scenars, perhaps even a bit better. Alternatively, why not take a step up and run the new 177 Sierra Matchkings, which come pointed from the manufacturer and have a markedly higher BC than the Lapua 185 Scenar? In fact, the SMK 177s have a BC almost as high as the 185 Juggernauts (unpointed) straight out of the box (~0.278 vs 0.284 G7), and can be driven faster at a given pressure due to the lighter weight. The best news of all, they're currently available at Bruno's for only $37.70 per 100 count box:

A friend recently used the 177s in our local 600 yd MR match and they shot quite well. I believe it is a very good design. The point is that you have plenty of alternative choices to 185 Juggernauts, both in terms of price and the predicted performance (BC). Finding out exactly what bullets are available, determining from the manufacturer's specs whether they are well-suited for your purpose, and how much they will cost, merely requires some time spent searching online.

The LAPUA 185 Scenar and BERGER 185 Juggernaut are both TANGENT OGIVE design. Both are very accurate bullets. However, the Juggernaut with its over SAMMI LENGTH nose dimension for a bullet designed to be loaded to magazine length does have better BC NUMBERS. If you want to load a good bullet to magazine length or set the bullet out to increase performance at longer ranges. You can do that with both bullets. However, the Juggernaut bullet when seated to magazine length MAY affect the powder capacity of the cartridge case, depending on its length (IE .308 WIN VS .30-06) due to the longer nose dimension. So, take this into account when making a decision between the two.
