Lapua Center X

It is funny how much superstition and bias creeps into ammo perspectives.

Boy ain't that the truth! I see this dead horse topic is being beaten once again. Folks have written page after page about testing they've done using all sorts of rimfire ammo. And it still remains, there are certain ammos that work for people in their particular rifles and those same familiar brands still come out on top of discussions. And certainly, Lapua and Eley are among those mentioned over and over again with a few folks (like me)having reporting on the success they've had with Federal Ultra Match UM22 that shoots better than Lapua CenterX or Midas+ in my Anschutz. The CONSTANT that remains over time, is that you MUST shoot any particular brand in your particular rifle to find out what a very sensitive rimfire will like. And all the testing with lots of a particular brand, that you've found shoot best for YOU, is still a must if you want to enter any serious competition. Alas, the final step is how well the shooter and his rifle perform under certain conditions when it really counts. And for what its worth, I use Midas+ and Center X to practice with as they still don't preform best in a full ARA target course that gets you 2500 points. Just my .02 worth.

Completely ignoring lot numbers, I believe the only difference between Center X and Midas+ and Eley Match and red box is quality control. Same with the two Wolf grades of "match" ammo.

Of course, different rifles, even sister and brother of the exact same model, will shoot better with one brand of ammo over another.

it is interesting to note the group size open or close depending on temperature for certain rounds. Eley Club does well for me whan cold out say under 38 degrees and colder vs the hotter degree days of summer where a barrel is 100 degrees or hotter to the touch.

Means a lot when the match is shot outside at freezing temps vs a summer day. In my part of Arizona it was 10 this morning, with snow on the ground....

Eley EPS does not shoot well in my 30 inch Lilja tightbore in the cold (mini-palma rifle). I suspect that bullet was designed for 50 meters and not 100 yards. That may explain why some believe it is more wind sensitive at 100. Firing through double chronographs (one near the muzzle and one at 100 yards) it appeared to have a lower ballistic coefficient than the Laupa round nose. Some believe EPS stabilizes sooner, but I have not tested that theory.

First , mrjohns, that's some fine shooting sr. I have been reading a lot of good information tonight and just wanted to give one more perspective , most of the great shooters have expensive rifles that in my opinion should shoot extremely well for what they cost . To prove the other side of the spectrum the less expensive rifles should be far more sensitive to ammo choices . I used a CZ 452 silhouette that likes the centurion orange box on hot days , loves the Remington / Ely target rifle and the CX but lusts after the Lapua m+ to 100 yds , but the thing I don't understand is the lower end shells do lots better to 200 ??? Just my observation .
