Lapua 6BR flash holes

Lately, I've noticed quite a bit of variation of flash hole diameters on later Lapua 6BR cases. In the past, I've just opened them all to .0625 for a consistent size. But on some new 30BR cases I'm finishing, the diameters were all over the place.....from a few at .057 all the way to .062 as verified by a pin gauge. With a 20X loupe, all the holes were nice and round with no slivers of material to skew the measurements. This was from 50 cases this morning...you can see by the material that some holes were just touched up and some had quite a bit more removed.

Good shootin' :) -Al

I've had the same experience with Lapua 6BR. I have one of the old Sinclair tools that uniforms the flash hole. It looks like the one pictured above. I've gone to cleaning up every piece of new Lapua 6BR and 6.5x47 brass.

A few years ago I had flash holes that were inconsistent to say the least. So I took the advice of an old time BR shooter and opened them all with a .071 drill.
I now do this before any other step in prepping new brass, and have no more stuck depriming pins.

When Lapua first brought out their version of the 6BR, the flash holes were actually 1.5 mm, which is just under 1/16. Shooters 1/16 decapping pins were sticking.

Lapua supposedly switched to a 1/16, because pins stopped sticking.

I do run a 1/16 drill through mine, some do actually remove a sliver of material while with others the drill just passes through.

I have often thought about opening up the flash holes on my 30BR cases, just never have gotten around to it.

Jackie, in the past I've taken them out incrementally to .080 and never noticed anything one way or another. That was with H4198, though. With your recent cool temp results with N130, it might be worth revisiting.

Years ago, a famous bullet maker stated that he felt his Rem BR cases gave him a little more accuracy than his Lapua. Upon investigating he found the Rem cases had a much larger flash hole. I don't remember the rem size. I began right them opening mine up to the Rem size, lo those many years ago. and continue to do it.
