Lapua 6.5 creedmore brass into 6 creedmore

Hey guys, I've been looking into building a 6mm cartridge and I see lapua is starting to make 6.5 creed brass. Do you guys see any problems with necking down the new brass to 6 creedmore?

Heck, i was thinking about doing a 22 Creedmoor with a 40* shoulder, doughnuts be dammed.........

Since the bullet for a 6mm is shorter the doughnut is not a problem as bad. Now with 6.5Creedmoor they are an issue if you are using 140gr bullets.

I make my 6.5 Creedmoor brass from Lapua .308 Palma brass....I have not had any issues with doughnuts (other than the ones I eat...which is another story) on 9 firings and I use 141.5 and 142gr bullets. I just ordered a .183" freebore reamer from JGS and plan on shooting 115 DTACs and will use reformed/turned unfired .308 Palma converts for that rifle so I will be able to report from experience in a few months. I would buy the new Lapua 6.5 Creed brass for it if I did not have 200 cases already formed into 6.5 Creed brass sitting on the shelf.

I've been making 6XC cases out of their Palma brass for almost as long as it's been out there (six years?) & though it's a lot of work my cases last two to three times longer than anything I'd used previously shooting 6XC since 2004.

I have 200 on order, will be working it up soon after it's delivered.

I have hammered my Palma Creedmoor converts and they still won't divulge the primer pocket! Might have to waterboard them. Seriously though, I have run the pressure up to find the load max and with H4350, I have to compress the load quite a bit to get significant pressure signs using 140-142gr projectiles. It is tough stuff. Even those test cases have only slightly less primer seating pressure than moderately loaded 9x fired cases....which was a good find as I am growing weary of 'making' cases. Nice to know that I will be able to buy them for the 6mm Creed when it is finished.

Mark I can't see how it can not be, given the shorter case length out of the box. And starting out as 6.5, going down to 6mm ought to make any neck wall 'management' much less labor intensive.

I run a 6mm Wilson neck reamer into the pre-formed Palma cases I've been making after the shoulders are pushed back 95% once I've used a jeweler's saw to hack off most of what has to come off those necks anyway.

My hope is those two operations can be eliminated entirely working with this new option. What I'm more curious to learn is if the new stuff's case web is thinner than that on the Palma brass, making case capacity a little bit greater - ought to weigh less once fully formed - but maybe making for a little shorter case head longevity.

(You venture up for Black Earth's 4P match this weekend? Shoot the WRC league w/Mike still? I do miss that up here.... And who's Scott??)

A straight "neck down" with Lapua brass typically presents no "donut" issues because no part of the shoulder of the brass becomes part of the neck metal at the base of the neck. With Lapua brass (and Norma, Nosler, and many European makes of brass) the shoulder metal is thicker than the neck metal on whatever base case you have, and a "neck up" will generate a "donut" (i.e. which is best to remove by neck turning or reaming) but a "neck down" will not cause a "donut". If you are reforming brass and making a wildcat where shoulder metal becomes a part of the neck metal, then with Lapua brass you will always see a donut without fail.
