Lapua 308 palma brass

Fire the case once and then measure, after measuring neck size and fire, after firing measure again, after firing the second time neck size the case, load and then fire again. After firing for the third time measure the length of the case from the shoulder/datum to the case head mad compare with the first two measurements.

One variation of that story claims it is necessary to start over by full length sizing after firing the case 5 times and I wonder: How is it possible to start over with a case that has been fired 5 times? And I always wonder why reloaders can never figure a way to measure the length of the chamber from the shoulder/datum to the bolt face without firing the case. I think nothing of it but I can measure the length of the chamber from the shoulder to the bolt face three different ways without a head space gage.

And then there is the chamber cast; and then there is the three-in-one gage. I offered to modify a few gages for a builder/resource person/collector, he was not interested because the gage would no longer be period correct.

Guffey,
I have gages to my cases that have been fired until they are tight to chamber that case is measured then sized without bumping the shoulder back to check that the base of the case is not the cause of the tight closure of bolt.
If the case is still tight to close I then proceed to size the case bumping the shoulder until I have a slight resistance on the end of bolt closure then measure that is now my reference gage.
I then size my brass to that measurement from then on after every firing I shoot competition every weekend of the year I go through a lot of ammo a year and I run stiff charges in my cases and I'm yet to have a case failure yet my current batch of palma cases are on the 25th firing so I must be doing something wrong.

Cheers Trev.

Do you have anything to offer? Nude Nut said he had gages; looking through his response can you think of a way to improve on his methods and or techniques? A lot of posters are lonely and demand attention and then there are those that feel threatened, do you have anything to offer?

Boltflutter, over and over a reloader on a reloading forum is instructed to fire the case 4 to 5 times and then start over; 'START OVER! ?' I could never figure how a reloader could start over with a case that has been fired 4 to 5 times and I have never found a reloader that knew the difference between a case that has been fired once, twice, three times or four times. That puts me into the category of being the only reloaders that can fire a case once when fire forming to determine the length of the chamber from the shoulder to the bolt face. I have fired cases that had no memory of what it was before firing.

That also puts me into the category of reloaders that can measure the length of the chamber from the shoulder to the bolt face without fire forming. My methods and or techniques allows me to form cases first and then fire. I eject once fired cases, other reloaders eject fire formed cases.

Boltflutter, how is it possible to move the shoulder back? How is it possible to bump the shoulder back? It is literally impossible to move the case shoulder back with a full length sizing die. I am the only reloader that can move the shoulder back, I can not move the shoulder back with a full length sizing die. I know, that sounds threatening, it is not bragging, all you have to do is explain is the part where you move the shoulder back and then there is 'bump'; the shoulders on my cases do not move back.
