Lapua 105grn Scenar???

Hey guys as some of you know I am having a new 6BR built. I have decided to use the 87grn V-Max for shots from 0-to-400 yards. However, I am trying to decide on a long range bullet. I am going to use the 105grn A-Max, but I have been told the 105grn Lapua Scenar is an awesome bullet and does very well out of .236 bore barrels. My barrel is a Bartlein 1-8 twist with a .236 bore, so I am thinking this is the way to go.

The bullet review rates them as the Flag ship bullet for the long range 6mm. They also state that the BC is understated. I have been told by other 6mm shooters that the 105grn Scenar is a great bullet for long range shooting and varminting. The bad thing, they are about 5 to 6 more dollars compared to the Sierra's and Bergers and 12 more dollars compared to the Hornady 105grn A-Max. I 've been told they are worth the extra $$$$. What do you guys think?

I would rather use Lapua Scenar's right out of the box than have 60-80 sorted piles of 107g SMK on ogive lengths in my basement. The Hornady's are pretty good too, but ask Walt about putting a plastic tip on a mass produced bullet consistenty with the center of gavity not getting upset... can't be done.

Shoot the Scenar's, at $6 more per 100, that is only 6 cents more per shot... and have peace of mind.... peanuts considering the price of a new barrel, which you will need at about 2000 rounds). You could always buy a box of each and test 'em first to see which one YOUR barrel likes...

I've just started playing with the Scenars in my 6-284, so I can't really say anything from personal experience, but I would never choose them for a varminting bullet. Even the Bergers with a much thinner jacket have unreliable expansion on varmint-size game at longer ranges. If you want to shoot paper, try the Scenars, for varmints, the 87 V-Max or 105 A-Max.

Yea, I have heard the Scenars are super accurate but not the best for long range varminting. I will just try them all out and see which one my rifle likes the best and go from there.

The 6mm Scenar 105s run about .0003 to .0005 narrower than most domestic 6mm match bullets in that weight range. Accordingly, you may find they shoot exceptionally well if you have a barrel on the tight side, or if you have a 0.236 Krieger or Bartlein.

I will say this, the Lapua 105s Jason and I got a couple years back are probably some of the most uniform factory bullets we've ever tested--and the meplats were nice and small. More recent lots have larger meplats, which could affect their BC.

Bottom line: try different bullets and see what your rifle likes.,I would NOT be surprised if the 87gr V-Maxs don't shoot particularly well in your rifle, BTW. You might try the Berger 88s or 95s instead.)

6BR

Do yourself a favor and try some Berger 105 VLD's and Berger 108 BT's. The VLD's are slightly more particular about seating depth and prefer to be into the lands. The 108 BT's are a bit more forgiving.
Both bullets with a proper load will shoot 1/4 min or less @ 100 yards and are good from there to 1000 yards. I've shot groups measuring less than 1" with both bullets at 600 yards in two different 6BR's.

Dreever thanks for the info. I ordered the Berger 105grn VLD's too. I will try the Lapua 105grn Scenar, 105grn A-Max and the 105grn VLD. I will be using my 6BR for long range Ground Squirrel and Pdog shooting, so I am thinking the 105grn A-Max might be the best bullet for terminal performance and accuracy.

I am looking forward to testing them all out. This will be my first 6BR. I have heard the 6BR is real easy to find a load that works. I was told the 6BR, with a 1-8 twist barrel, will shoot bullets from 70 to 107grn really well. I will report back when I find a load.

Eric Stecker has done lots of testing,,along with others) using the 105 Bergers in 8 twist barrels. They are blowing up quite often. 8 twist is too much for the Bergers.

Say what?

I disagree with this statement completely. I won't say there have not been isolated cases of bullet blow-ups,more likely in 7 or 7.5 twist barrels). But I think the above post WAY overstates the problem. Somewhere around 3280 fps is a figure where you have to be concerned with Berger std jacket 6mm bullet integrity -- based on the reports I've received.

In my 6BR I don't think I could push them fast enough to blow up before I experienced some pretty heavy pressure problems.

I've shot quite a few Berger & JLK 105VLDs out of four different Dashers, three w/Kriegers, one with a 5C Broughton)at velocities from 2990-3080fps; also used them in a 6x47L at 3100fps without any blow-ups or other failures.

I've worn out three 1:8" twist 6BR barrels, close to 4000 rounds each) and have their three replacements well into their mid-life, about 90% of the bullets fired have been Berger 105 VLD and I have not had a single failure. With the 6XC, two barrels, 1:7.5" twist, roughly 2000 rounds fired, almost all Berger 105, 108 and 115 and no failures of any sort either. All bullets are moly for what its worth.

I have shot over 1000 105 VLDs in a 6mm Ackley at over 3200 fps and have yet to have a failure.

Can't see speak for anyone else, but my bullets make it to the target every time.

Jeez, don't you just hate it when someone pulls all of their posts--makes you feel like you're talking to yourself. :)

FWIW, I decided to not try the Berger 105 or 108s in my 6-284, because I wasn't convinced that they would hold together at 3400+ out of an 8-twist .236 bore. This wasn't based on anyone's claims of failure, only the general discussion of J4 jacketed bullets at high RPM rates.
