Lapping/ring marks

I just lapped a set of rings and Im still getting ring marks on the scope. I cleaned them really well to make sure i was getting all the grit off, and i did not think i over tightened them.
Any recommendations?

robbor: That's why I like and use the Burris Signature rings. Got tired of lapping and still leaving marks on very $$$$ scope tubes. Does not happen with the Burris, and you have the added advantage of being able to use the off-set inserts if needing more windage/elevation. Have not bought "conventional" rings for almost 6 yrs.

robbor, It is hard to believe with some applications but 20 to 26 in. pds. is all that is required to hold the caps on most rings. Steel rings even after lapping will mark a scope if you go much past about 30 in. pds. I learned the hard way too man because I used to think the cap screws had to be as tight as possible. Bill

If you are mounting a scope using a convential ring, I'll use leupold as an example, because thats the only brand I use, other than the Burris Signature, when I need lots of elevation. First I use an alignment bar to center the scope rings over the action and barrel, using windage rear). This takes the torque or stress off the scope once you put it in the rings. Before installing the scope in the rings, I coat the inside of the rings w/RUBBER CEMENT. When you have tightened the ring caps sufficiently, the excess glue will appear on the outside of the rings. Dont get excited, this hurts nothing. Let it dry completely, then it is easily peeled off. I see reference in another post about overtightening. I use a standard Leupold star driver. I tighten the cap srews an tight as I possibly can w/that tool. What I watch for is equal spacing between top and bottom ring halves, both front and rear. I have mounted lots of scope using this method, and thus far have not marked that first one. Larry

After lapping your scope rings, greases your scope lightly with realese agent and bed your rings with scope in Devcon steel, wipe off excess. Gauranteed you will not mark a scope again.
