Lands and grooves?

Hello everyone,
I was thinking about building another .284 Win. and was wondering if I should go with the 5R rifling. I have never shoot any rifle with the 5R rifling but was wondering if its a plus to have compared to normal rifling.
The barrel on my .284 rifle now is a Brux but I was thinking that there barrels was 6 grooves. My rifle barrel has only 4.
Thanks Anthony

AWL -

Howdy !

Can't speak exactly to "5R" rifling, but will say that my Broughton 6mm SS 1-8 w/ " 5-C " rifling shoots superbly, and cleans-up w/o needing a brush

DK if that helps any ?

With regards,

I just had two 5R barrels chambered in 284 Shehane this summer and both exhibit reamer chatter (both by reputable gunsmiths). Gordy Gritters had much to say about chambering 5R barrels. It can be read in this thread.

The first barrel would not shoot, but the second one ( a 1.25" straight barrel) is shooting very well in spited of the lobes caused by chatter. Mark Penrod, the smith who chambered the straight barrel, says the problem is with the design of the PT&G reamer and that I need to use a JGS reamer for that type barrel. Gordy says it's not the reamer and that the leade area needs pre-bored to keep it from chattering. I've a good mind to let Gordy do my next one in spite of his healthy chambering fee, just to see if he can get a smooth chamber with that PT&G. No one else has yet.

Interesting - contrary to both opinions, I have several 5R type barrels, of various calibers and manufacturers, chambered with Henriksen, or, PPG reamers, all which turned out perfectly . . . and shoot competitively. RG

Thanks for the replies.
I have seen reamers try to chatter in a normal rifling barrel. The fix was to wrap paper tape around the reamer and it would stop the chatter. I ask the smith that I was watching what makes the reamer chatter and he said because of it not being sharp.
