Barrel Question

Am thinking a Bartlein or Krieger 30" #12 heavy Palma barrel w/5R 1-9" rifling in 7mm-Something (Win .284, Shehane, WSM, etc.) for a 1000yd F-Open rifle. Would this barrel be a good place to start?

I think that contour is more commonly used in F-T/R. With the 22# weight limit, most F-Open shooters are using heavier barrels like straight 1.250 inches 30-32 inches long. Most of my F-Open barrels weigh between 9 and 10 pounds.

I have a 6 x 47 Lapua with a "Heavy Palma" contour. It was, at the time, the only barrel available because of this "shortage" going on. Last month in Beaumont I was shooting at 600 yards (20 shots times 3 matches)... The barrel got so hot (very short time between matches) that it started "walking" about 4" or so to the left. It was at that time I decided that either a 1.250 straight tube OR at the very least a 1.250 tapering to .980 in the Krieger #17 HV. That should keep the heat down to where the barrel won't cook so bad and begin to wander around. The barrel you are considering may get a bit hot VERY quickly... do yourself a favor and get the heaviest barrel contour your weight capacity will handle..

As Ben says, heat is one issue related to contour. Tracking is another. Search for some of "sleepygator's" old posts about his development of his 300 WSM. I believe that he went to barrels as long as 34 inches for balance and tracking more than ballistics. Hopefully, he will jump in here and speak for himself, but I think that is what he found necessary to shoot the big Berger 30's at high velocities with an F-Open rifle.

As Tony said; I use a 34" straight barrel for tracking reasons on my .300 WSM. Berger's 230 Hybrids cause enough recoil to upset the rifle's handling without the additional weight out front. A 7mm shooting 180 Hybrids is much easier to manage. Tony's also right about barrel length and contour. My .284 Shehane has 32" straight Ø1.25" barrels and tracks very well. [br]
It is also important to match barrel length to the stock. If you have a relatively short forend, a long, straight barrel could make the rifle too front heavy to track properly. I would look for at least 16" foward of the recoil lug. Ray Bowman at Precision Rifle and Tool makes an F-Open "Low Boy" that is a proven winner. If your chosen stock has a shorter forend, a 30" barrel might be a better choice. The velocity difference is not too significant, it's the bullet's B.C. that really matters.
