what difference does the number of lands and grooves make?

Hello guys,

Im in the process of deciding on the components for a 7mm SAUM build. and was wondering what effect does the different number of lands and grooves make. 3, 4, 5 or 6 grooves? or even polygonal rifling. the barrels Ive narrowed it down to are, Broughton 5c, Bartlien 5R or 4 groove or a PacNor 3 groove. Is there really any difference between them?

Thanks

hello I like the 5r in my 308win.to me it seems to clean up better.also it only uses very little of the rifeling to spin the bullet.but hey this is just my opion.and not too open up a can of worms here but I also think that the number of groves is a matter of opion.well thats what a friend of mine and me believe

I agree that 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc. can all win matches. I will say that my 3-grooves clean up easier than anything else I have. 3 grooves have fewer 90-deg angles to collect crud, and also the lands on a 3-groove are shallower.

Thanks for the replys. Im really interested in trying that Bartlein 5r. I think i may go ahead and order it.

Ive got a Lilja 3 groove and 2 Broughton 5c's and both clean extreamly well.

Also, one thing I noticed different about a friends Pac-Nor 3 groove barrel and my Lilja is, the lands seem to be much wider on the Pac-Nor than the Lilja.

Anybody have an idea if barrel life is better on a 3 groove, than 4 or 5 or 6?
also i would think the less grooves the less a bullet deformed, adding to a more accurate barrel........jim

I my limited experience, I can't see any accuracy difference in any of the rifling types. I get beat by different grove configurations all the time. As a position shooter, I shoot against T2K'S alot and it seems polygonal rifling gets pressure a little quicker. I have a Bartlien 5R barrel and it does clean easier. I can say this; all my future barrels will be Bartlien 5R's!!

Mike

Mike, I would guess the Bartleins 5r's would be very similar the Broughton 5c's I have now. the only major difference would the the method of rifling.

Its amazing how smooth the custom barrels are on the inside. your patch just slides down the barrel and feels glass smooth.
