Can anyone help me. I live in Australia and want to get a laminate blank to make a stock. I have been searching for probably 5 months now and every one either cant help or doesnt want to help. Im using a 223wssm and need to replace the synthetic stock as it flexes to much, but there arent any stocks made for it. I cant buy one from outside Aus because of customs but can only find a few people in aus that make stocks and no one that will get me a blank. I want to use it for some bench rest type hunting and also prone. I wanted to make a similar shape stock to the mastin mn stock that is listed here under stock makers. they are in Australia but they wouldnt give me the time of day when i asked them about a unfinished un inleted one.

Customs "will not reject" the item shipped. They keep it and it's never seen again. :'( And if it's a restricted item they'll go after the person it was sent to. (the voice of experience.

)I got one in thru Bill Shehane (www.scopeusout.com) a MBR tracker stock for use in F-Class. I understand he sends a few of his stocks downunder and I had no trouble receiving mine.
The stock is completely finished except for action and trigger inletting you can specify the size of the barrel channel and action you want on the stock.

I don’t think your info is correct a rifle stock is not a prohibited item generally speaking if it’s under the customs $$ threshold they won’t charge duty.
Have you phoned Aust Customs to discuss what you would like to import they are usually fairly helpful.
If this doesn’t satisfy you PM me and I can give you some alternatives.

Its not because its a prohibited item its because its wood. you have to get special permits and have it fumigated so there for i would need to hire a customs broker to deal with it. I dont want to buy a finished stock as i want to keep the cost down as its not a competition rifle and everything i spend on the stock deducts from what i can spend on a scope. I cant buy an inleted stock because no one makes them for a wssm action. my father has been a pistol grip maker for 40 years or so so making the stock from a blank shouldnt be to hard just a lot of time. then I will have a gunsmith inlet and bed it. the way its going i might have to talk to customs to try and import something. this is the shape i want to build for various reasons but with a heavier foreend http://www.mastingunsmith.com.au/mnstock.jpg. I am trying to keep it under about 400 plus inleting. a local gunsmith has an uninleted one for 200 but its just a thumb hole sporter stock which isnt what im after but if its going to be a lot more than 400 then its not really worth it when im not shooting any form of competitions

Most of the stocks from the states (laminated) are treated the customs just want to check for pest that may hitch a free ride mostly it’s just a visual inspection.
I would suggest you go and talk to your local customs it shouldn’t be a big deal
I know ppl that can an have made laminated stocks from marine grade ply but this is not the laminates that mastin use or the ones you would have seen on the net this type of wood also does not look good clear coated because the opposing laminates run perpendicular to each other.
The only place you are going to get a laminated stock for $400aud is from the states through some one who mass produces them.
BTW I know some one in Aus that got 3 or 4 different timbers from Tassie sent it to Bill he crafted a blank out of it and sent it back to them in Aus.

Same problem in Canada. In the 1980`s I mail ordered 90% finished wood stocks from Fajen in the U.S. In the `90s the Canadian Govt decided my wooden imports were a threat to society because of possible creepy crawleys. I tried to assure them that I was not going to stick the stock into the ground in my backyard and watch it sprout but to no avail.
The heat and pressure of lamination would have zapped any lurking nasties but that seemed too logical for the bureaucratic mind.
Thirty years ago used to see California Claro walnut blanks in the Toronto gun shops with tarred ends. Some linseed oil smeared on to highlight the grain and figure. Don`t see them anymore. They might infect our huge groves of Claro walnut that sprout up through the ice and snow.
Third party stocks are now synthetic except for a few small Canadian companies making laminated target stocks.

that is why im just after a blank i cant buy a stock for what i want to pay but i can make one. a local gunsmith said he could get me a blank off boyds for 180 but i think he decided its to much trouble because he didnt do any more about it despite quiet a few emails
It really doesn't take much to make a laminate blank. Any wood shop with a plainer and a band saw could do it. Now days laminate stocks are made from just about any wood. I use epoxy to glue them up. When you ship one Internationally, call it a chunk of wood and not a gun stock.
