Kroil, really?

Acetone and atf4 is the best penetrating fluid I have ever used. 30 years as a maintenance mechanic
Mixed up a gallon of this 6 months ago (50/50 mix) and added a couple ounces of oil Wintergreen oil to it. Haven't tried it in a barrel but it works well on rusted exhaust manifold bolts.

Charlie, If you can, use a wool mop, dripping wet with the Free all after you are done with the last match. Put a rag with rubber band over the muzzle. Let that Free All sit for 4 hours to a couple of days, then brush. You will notice a big difference in how the carbon comes out.

Last year, a friend passed and my brother bought Billy's Rem 7400 in 30/06. This 7400 had never been cleaned and the muzzle's bore looked as if it was gold coated. I put a cork in the muzzle and filled the barrel completely full of Free All. 8 Months later, I pulled the cork, and a blueish slurry poured out of the bore. The Free All had gone down beneath the layers of carbon and Copper and had free'd up the fouling, but some still remains. I need to brush it now.
8 months is a long soak time

80's thru the early 2000's I used a 50-50 mix of Kroil and Hoppe's benchrest solvent. Now it's Free All. A chamber plug and an overnight soak for neglected barrels that I'm asked to clean.

Brother and I could not get the barrel clean, I pulled out all the tricks. We pretty much wrote off the gun, figured to just let is soak for the long haul and not think about the aggravation. I was about to clean it with 600 & 800g Silicone carbide paste, then opted to do a soak first.

Good that it worked!

Did the liquid not soak in thru the gas port?
yes, I kept filling it up over time, it was also clogged pretty good.

The true test is to get an F class barrel where the owner did not like to clean guns or prescribed to the technique of cleaning every 400-600 rounds. These barrels are usually carbon fouled from breach to muzzle, solid black. I will put a cork in one of these barrels, soak for two months, drain and immediately brush with a new bronze bristle brush, 40 strokes. Dry patch out, then repeat the soak. By the third soaking, the carbon is 95% gone, and with a little Montana Extreme copper cream, JB, or Iosso, the bore is down to bare metal.

I did not use any other method on these barrels other than what is stated above.

Thurro-Clean in on the menu to try on one of these abused barrels.

Previously, I had been using Kroil since the mid 80's, and kroil and JB with bronze bristle brushes on the P dog towns were standard procedure when running 300 round shot strings on small cases and 150 rounds with 243 AI's.

Has anyone thought of
1) removing the barrel
2) Put the barrel in a vise
3) Use a special cleaning rod with one brush or more placed between the ends of the rod
4) Attached the rod to a push-pull motorized poly system
5) Dripping penetrating oil into the barrel

Sounds like it’s safe then.
Of the constituents listed, the oleic acid is the least concerning in terms of health and safety risks.

You actually get it in your diet with many veggies and it is the part of things like olive oil that is credited with health benefits.

Stuff like MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone) is a solvent known to be good for nitrocellulose among other things. I would be careful with any and all gun solvents that are hydrocarbon based. Be careful with any and all ketones, xylenes, acetones, etc., and treat them with respect. Your lungs, liver, kidneys, etc., do not come with a warranty so take good care of them. YMMV
