Kroil alternitive ??

Here is something a friend of mine sent me after I asked him if had any extra Kroil laying around his machine shop. My question is, would you use the ATF/ acetone in a barrel the way you would with Kroil ?? See below for the differences. Good info anyway !!
Thanx again,

FYI on Penetrating Oils

Interesting! Even if you're not mechanically inclined, this might be worth
noting.

"Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating
oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "break out
"torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular
penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to
remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" bolt.

Average torque load to loosen nut:
No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds
WD-40 ..................... ........238 foot pounds
PB Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix...................... 53 foot pounds

The ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any
commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with
equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as
Kroil for 20% of the price.

One of the guys that used to shoot on the USMC Reserve Pistol Team gave me a vial of 1/4 Marvel Mystery Oil, 1/4 ATF, 1/4 WD40 and a 1/4 Kroil. Works good on slides and bolt carriers!

What you are making is called "Ed's Red" and it works like a charm.
I keep a quart of the stuff mixed and use it as my first line in cleaning a barrel.

Google Ed's Red and get the complete recipe and ideas on substitution to either lower cost even more or what guys are using it for.

Stuff does work and is an even better penetrating solution for tight or rusted fasteners.

At the end of each season of competitions using moly coated bullets, I use bore foam to remove copper deposits. Then wipe the bore(s) with clean patches, then apply Ed`s Red for winter storage. When the solvents dissapate, the remaining portion is the ATF...an excellent moisture barrier. I mix a gallon at a time, and tend to give away plenty to shotgun shooters as well as to those with a newly accuired milsurp rifle with questionable bores. The feedback has always been positive...less scrubbing.

Torque seems to be another tangent to focus on instead of shooting. ;)

is there a certain type of ATF that works best there are different types , Ford trans. take one type GM takes another does it take a certain type???

One pint can of Kroil lasts for a long, long time! I have heard of various concoctions made up with ATF fluids in the past, plus a couple others. Old time mechanics also used brake fluid as a penetrating oil (never liked the stuff). Chestertons has a very good penetrator as well, but still think Kroil is better. But neither one will do everything! A good example is that most of the commercial penetrating oils don't work well when removing bolts that have been used on grinders with synthetic coolants. But 200 degree water with soap in it will (I like floor stripper).

ATF fluids are true synthetic oils (Mobile One is not). Also know to be of a very high detergent nature, so I could see where they might help. Have also seen compounds rigged up using Marvels and Royal Purple. But all three of these have the same problem in that they are a little on the thick side and don't penetrate as well. One might try Mobile DTE 21 or DTE 24 mixed with a very small amount of liquid Dawn and something like mineral spirits or even acetone. Problem you have is mixing it up well. On the other hand Kroil seems to be acidic, and will break thru rust, and have yet to ever see another do this. I suspect that it has some hydrochloric acid in it or something similar to break thru the rust. I'll stick with Kroil.
