I am doing my barrel brake in and i am noticing a huge amount of copper in my new barrel after one shot. I am doing the one shot and clean and its been a choir! The barrel is a gain twist krieger. Does the gain twist have anything to do with this? I wouldnt think so but i am baffled by the amount of copper this barrel is collecting with one bullet going down the tube. I can see the copper inside there when looking in the muzzle with a light. Does this just sometimes happen, will it clear up?? Do i have anything to worry about? I dont want to call Krieger if this is a common occurrence. Any thoughts? Lee

Lee,
Try running a patch of Kroil through the bore then fire it.
This should make it a little easier to clean,,I've had some barrels that have taken 50+ rounds before they clean up..
If you need some ill bring it by and leave it on your porch..

Thanks Jim I could use it this afternoon when i begin the one shot and cleaning all over again. Lee

I have been using JB on the throat of a fresh chambered barrel to help smooth out machine marks and small burrs left by the reamer. You are breaking in the throat maybe as much or more than the barrel. The throat is rough from chambering it can leave much copper all the way down the tube.

No, I wish i did!! I dont think there is any major problems yet. I was just a little shocked to see the copper in that amount with only a single bullet down the pipe. I am still learning and this wasnt something i have seen before. I did a bunch of reading and talking with my smith and Krieger and I have come to the conclusion That there isn't any problems as of now. I will shoot it this weekend for groups and see where I am at after 50-60 rounds. If it continues I will spin the barrel off and have a closer look. Thanks fellas for the info I do appreciate it!!!! Lee

Lee, I suggest that you read and, fully understand, the last 2 posts, on the '30 cal 3 groove Lilja' thread in 'Advanced Gunsmithing'. Francis and Al have summed up these 'Jump the Gun' reactive threads for just what they are. BS!!!

Had the same issue on a bartlien 5R in 30 cal, and after working for hours on the first few shots I was ready to send the barrel back. A little elbow grease and some Isso and now it looks great and cleans up fast.

I hadn't ever seen that much copper in a custom barrel before so i was a tad bit curious as to why it was doing what it was doing, as far as the copper. The copper was everywhere inside the barrel. I have always had great luck with krieger barrels as i have them on all but one rifle. The gain twist was really new to me and i wondered if that had something to do with it. To come to find out, the gain twist doesnt have anything to do with it. One thing i learned with this hoe experience was the use of the magical KROIL!!! That's some great stuff. A good friend told me to try it out and see what happens. That pretty much did the trick. I had always cleaned my barrels and when i was done i left them dry. What i needed to do with a new barrel especially while doing the brake in, is to run a wet patch of Kroil through the bore and then follow it up with a dry patch, then go shoot. Thats all it took. There is still a little copper, but it is clearing up with every shot. The rifles shoots great groups, and all is well. I know i talk to much on here but this stuff is all i ever think about. I love this rifle stuff!!! There is just so much a guy can learn about this stuff. It never ends. I guess that why i enjoy it so much! Anyway thanks again for all the help. Next time i see this type of situation i will know what to do, or not to do!! Lee
