Gain twist Gain Twist 8.7' to 8.3- Questions??

Hello all,

I am looking at doing my first 'Big Boy' build and am looking at a Kreiger 6mm barrel w/ a Gain Twist 8.7' to 8.3'. What is up with that? What is it supposed to gain you?
Will it stabilize the 107's/ 105's out to 1000yds? 28' finish length.

Thanks

That gain twist should be optimum for the 105's in a 6mm br the last I heard...
It should smooth out the pressure I would think, I'll know more when I have one of them up and running in a month or so..

I have a Bartlein 5c that goes from 1:9" at the breech to 1:8" at the muzzle and it shoots absolutely great. The 1:9" twist seems to take the edge off the pressure peak. The cartridge I use it with is the 6mmAR Turbo 40 which has the same capacity as a 6 BR (38 gr of water weight).

I have the same Krieger barrel your talking about. I am no one to talk technical with you but i can share what i have experienced. I had the Krieger gainer chambered in 6 dasher. I am still blowing out my brass with the false shoulder method but my accuracy is really great. I did load up 5 fire formed cases a couple weeks ago just to see how it would shoot with the 105 Berger VLD bullets and it was awesome. All five went in a group that measured .205 @ 100 yards. I did have some copper issues at the first but that cleared up pretty fast. I shot some 107 sierras yesterday while blowing out some brass and they group pretty well also. Again I cant tell you what the gain twist barrel gives you over a standard twist barrel, but i can tell you after 40 rounds down the pipe i am liking it very much!! Good Luck! Lee

I regularly find myslef struggling with the fact that my background in following evidence-based research and abiding by paradigms based on objective conclusions on a professional basis frequently clashes with the tendency in shooting to "Follow the leader".

What I am trying to say is that gain twist rifling - while intuitively practical - is unsubstantiated by proper objective quantification. Simply put... Nobody has proven - or expalined - the legitimate benefits of gain twist rifling. The efficacy of gain twist rifling tends to rely on accounts of success achieved by shooters with credible credentials, not their properly measured comparisons.

To that end, no quantified technical benifit to gain twists exists. Might be something to it.... doesn't seem to hurt anything. If it makes you feel better, that variable is as tangible as any other... go for it.

I like the simply put section, it was easier to understand...

I personally have been testing & shooting gain twist barrels for some time now. Several top shooters in IBS 600 yd. have witnessed enough evidence including (Larry Isenhour's record) that they have decided to try one also. I know that the short range guys are having great success with gain twist barrels. I can tell you from the shooters that I have installed barrels for that the pressure signs are lower & that they seem to shoot as good as any straight twist barrel. Only time will tell, but it seems that alot of shooters have interest in this & as long as we are striving to improve accuracy that is a positive. The advantages & techonologies we have now versus several years ago (actions, barrels, bullets, powder, scopes) may prove that the gain twist previously never had a fair chance. The theory of gain twist has been around for years, if it had no merit they wouldn't keep recurring. Hopefully with all our new advances gain twist may be a part of precision shooting from now on.

I just put a Ron Smith barrel on a REM 700.
15-1--8-1 Progressive twist.
I'm running Berger 105 VLDs 29g. Varget Federal primer at 3014 average. I haven't tried any more powder. Tiny groups too.
