Know Your Limits Comp Scope

Getting everytihng tuned and ready for the Bench Rest KYL comp in March. I'm fairly proficient with my 25-06 and 4-20 XTRII. I have several other scopes to choose from, and I'm wondering if it'd be worth going higher to up my chances on those long small targets. The hardest one will probably be the 3in steel at 600yds. I have a 5-25 X5 and a 15-60 GE to choose from. Would I be better off with the extra power of the GE or stick with the lower range of the X5 in case there is mirage. That small target will be shot prone.

Sure about the 3" at 600 yard? Is it 3" diameter? We shoot 5" dia. steel at 600 and most use the higher 40+x scopes there. If that 600 yard target is that small, I think the GE would be well worth the switch, especially if you have it already dialed in. I have one and like it.

Myself, even in bad mirage, it would be a rarity for me to be much under 30X, and confident I would likely never turn a 25X scope down. With that said, of your two, I suggest the GE.

Good points, I mounted the X5 up the other night, but may switch over to the GE for tuning this weekend. I'll have to sight in, but the rifle is already shooting very well. The targets are 200-600 yds away and there are 3 targets at each range 2moa, 1moa, and .5moa. So, at 600yd, there are 12", 6" and the 3". I can hold about 3" at 500yds with the 20x. I'm pretty sure with a finer aiming point and higher mag I can get that a little tighter. That XTRII is a great scope, but the FFP reticle gets a bit thick at full power.

Being that the XTR has a thick FFP reticle, it wouldn't be ideal for "aiming small" at long range.

The Swarovski X5 glass is far superior to anything else on the list and resolution goes a long way when aiming small and trying to shoot through atmospheric conditions. The power of the GE would be nicer as well.

Basically, I would use anything other than the Burris. The XTR doesn't compete optically with the other two, it has the least power, mushy turrets (unless they changed something there) and it has the thickest reticle on max power as a FFP

I bought an X5I for my hunting gun. Love the glass, bright and clear and good in low light. The clicks hold out and it seems to hold point of aim. Setting the zero stop was another story. The first time I did it I only had about 26 MOA left. Tried to redo it and when I slid the collar I couldn't get it back. I kept playing with it and somehow I got it where I had the full 70 minutes up, like your supposed to.

It is a great scope though. I love the reticle, makes it easy to aim small at distance. I also love the illuminated reticle. The Orange is way easier on the eyes verses red and doesn't tend to wash out the view. Changing the brightness is easy, just push a button right on the eyepiece.

I can aim at small objects at distance and the 25x is plenty for me. Matt

I'm going out to the farm for practice this weekend, so I think I'll run both the GE and X5 for a couple groups and see which one works the best. I know the GE is a great target scope, but I'm not sure how well it'll do in a more dynamic situation like PRS style shooting. The barricade positions may tax the higher mag for finding the target. We'll see.
