I could never sharpen a knife by hand w a stone. Bought one of these. Easy to use. Anyone can sharpen a knife to razor edge.

The 8'' DuoSharp fine/extra fine will get the job done . A leather strop like you see in a barber shop will put the finish edge on it.

Most any old half way sharp knife will shave going down hill or down your arm but when you can get it to do that going the other way or up your arm that's when you have it mastered. When you get to that point you will need to be more careful showing off or you will be bleeding.

Funny you said the ladder. I use to carry a fixed blade knife all the time when I worked on the water. Kept it razor sharp in case a line caught me or crew member as it was being deployed overboard.
I had just sharpened it and was in our local watering hole having an adult beverage. A guy asked to see it, I agreed but warned him I had just sharpened it and it was a razor.
I guess he didn't believe me and ran his thumb down the blade. I didn't see it but my buddies said it laid his thumb wide open.
All I heard was everyone telling him that I told him it was razor sharp.
He left with a bar towel dripping blood.
Dumb ass.

Well, you've really mastered it when you can shave A hair.

I know a guy who can do it, he'll yank a hair out of his head and start carving and splitting it in the air.

When you can do that it's time to pick up another hobby.

Look up Sharp Pad on line it is a process a friend of mine sells and it will make you wonder about sharpening knives. The amazing thing it gives you a way to finally see how sharp you can get them with a measurement.
I know that everyone has a knife the wife cuts everything that you are not supposed to cut. My wife's knife tested at 1800 on the scale and I brought it back to 200 in short order. for reference the finest double edge razor blade is 50 on the scale when brand new. I cant make it that sharp or she will hurt herself.

Nothing in it for me just a crazy way to test and check your sharpness.

I picked up a Tru Hone from a butcher shop that was going out of business a few years ago.
It is simply the best sharpener that I have ever used and yes I have owned a lot of them.

All I'll say is good sharpening requires investment. Whether that's investing in guided systems and tools or time and practice in hand sharpening, it's still there. Personally, I sharpen everything by hand, including my straight razors because I didnt like the idea of paying for a system. So choose where you want to invest.

I built this grinder that gets used for my sharpening needs using a slack belt. But since my brother that passed a year ago was the real master at knife sharpening I will try to improve my skills with his set up. He used a Grizzy 1X42 that he had put a Baldor motor on using 4 step pulleys so he could reduce the belt speed when going to the very fine belts and leather belts. He also finished with a horse hide strop.

I'll admit that I don't have much use for a "shaving edge" on my everyday carry knife, nor with almost every other knife. A knife that will shave, is good for showing off and shaving, but that edge will be gone with one swipe of the crap that I usually cut on my job.

I'd feel pretty bad if I couldn't grab a 2x4 stone of most any kind, and bring my edge to a "near shave" sharpness. The advice I'd give for anyone who wants to keep your knife decently sharp and easy to resharpen, is NEVER cheat on your bevel. It's pure kid's stuff to take a dull knife and want to bring it to an edge with a couple licks. Do that and you have just changed your bevel from 20 degrees to 30. Pretty soon you've got an edge that takes a half hour to bring back.

I've been using these knives for awhile, they aren't fancy or expensive, but work for me. I've gutted "and skinned" deer and elk with them, and otherwise mis-used them for about anything you could think of.


I guess if I had fancier knives, and less use for them, I'd prolly spend more time making them shave. jd

Considering upgrading my knife sharpener to a Tormek T4 or the Grizzly industries equivalent, or the WEN grinder. I currently use a Galco/Lansky style up to 2000 Grit, and while effective, it just takes too dang long and it's not the edge I'd like.

For those in the know... can I get a grizzly grinder for 140ish and expect to be extremely satisfied with the results?

Anyone have a Tormek/Grizzly around the Fargo/Moorhead area that would be interested in showing me the ropes? I live halfway between FM and DL.

Get a Tormek and don't look back. For sharpening an edge, there's none better unless you know how to use a set of Japanese stones to do the job. Their jigs make it easy.

I use belt sanders described above for grinding a knife, which is more aggressive and used when making a new edge on a new blade, or when a knife has a damaged edge and you need to put it back to level by removing more material. After grinding, then you would go to a Tormek IMHO to get your final edge.
