Kahles K1050 vs Schmidt & Bender 12-50x56 PM II/P

Looking for a new scope, and these two have caught my eye. I've seen lots of threads here where people love the Kahles K1050, but I haven't seen anything about the S&B. Does anybody have one? Has anybody compared them?

I have one - works for me , awesome scope indestructible - brilliant glass - had it on everything from a 338L to a .308win gasser, now lives on a 260 rem,

I have two. I sold the other scopes I had used on the same rifles. They work for me also. I have not compared them, mainly because I don’t care for the Kahles reticle, which is a little too busy for me. I’m sure the Kahles glass is excellent.

I have the 1050 khales
And I think my buddy has the bender your asking about. I love my khales and have nothing but good to say about it. His bender has been sent back twice because grease or something gets on the reticle lense. Maybe it’s bc he has it on a 375 Cheytac and the recoil is doing it.... I dunno, but he loves it other than the constant grease smudge problem it has had since new. I think it’s more of an annoyance than a problem but when you fork out the dough for one of these scopes you expect perfection.

What do you think of the reticle? How thick is it?
I have the “Sport” reticle which has a dot. The dot sub tends 0.19 MOA at 50 power. I had a “Sport Fine” reticle in which the dot was 0.09 MOA, but I had trouble seeing it under some conditions. The dimensions for S&B reticles can be found on their website under downloads/data sheets. The website can be found with a search for Schmidt and Bender. (I never remember the URL)
Ultimately, I think you are going to have to look through the actual scopes to make your decision.

I have the Schmidt, brilliant scope, really outstanding. It seems to be fairly unpopular amongst forum members, I was was also wondering why that would be? It sits at a high price point, but I don't see the need to buy anything else again, for target & general use, so, saving some money that way, by not having to upgrade in future.

Not sure what Kahles scope you are referring to but I own the K1050 and the reticle is one of the simplest, cleanest, uncluttered I have ever seen. There is a floating dot and the x and y axis have short subtending marks. Excellent F-class scope.

One of the reasons might be that the S&B is a porky bugger and that is a factor in F-class, for example. Compared to the Kahles you mentioned or the March High Master 10-60X56 or an 8-80X56, it's almost a half pound heavier. Many would rather put that weight in the barrel rather than the riflescope.

I finally got a look through the Kahles. You’re right. The reticle is pretty simple and clean. Before, I had only seen the reticle on paper. I’ll still stick with my S&B’s, though, porky as they are.

the eye relief plus the soft rubber diopter ring that makes a soft landing on your forehead on those rare occasions when you do get whacked by the scope

Sorry..I guess i did not write that properly. The 1050 has specific and very accurate markers on the parallax dial for 100M, 200M up to 800M. It would be great if there were a specific marker for 900 and 1000 so that in the 3 minutes we have to set up our gear for a match, we could simply turn to 900 or 1000 and not have to find it by looking through and adjusting. They have the lower range markers there for a purpose...speed and simplicity of dialing in. Would be great to have them for the longer ranges. I agree that the Kahles K1050MOAK is a brilliant f-class scope. It could be more brilliant IMHO. As to whether or not it is the best, ummmm, let's not go there.

I'm not sure why Scott brought luxury Japanese cars into this discussion, but he is correct that there is no distance limit for the parallax.

Let's talk a little further about setting parallax for longer distances. Focusing an image at long distance and then recording that setting becomes more and more difficult was the distance increases; while the distance setting is quite large between say the nearest distance at which the scope can focus and 100 yards, the distance scale diminishes rapidly as the distance increases, to the point where the difference between 800 and 900 is much smaller than the writing on the knob and the difference between 900 and 1000 is smaller still. It's an inverse geometric proportion.

Also, depending on atmospheric conditions and other things, this focus distance might change just a little throughout the day. This is one of the reasons I use a large focus wheel on my March, so that I have better, finer control for those longer distances and also to rapidly switch back to a set intermediate distance to check mirage and then pop back to the long distance for the shot.

One really should never totally depend on the distance written on the knob, better to use that as a guide and refine while looking through the riflescope.
