Just Whining about Getting Old!

It's bad enough getting old (77) but on top of that, right now, I'm damned sick! I can't believe I haven't coughed up a lung, I look like I have tea bags stuck under my eyes, my throat glows stop-light red, and I've about wiped my nose off my face. When I was plodding/shuffling up from the shop, I was getting the trailer ready for a 2 week camping trip. The plan was to pick up my 82 year old aunt and go down to Nevada and go camping and rock picking with my uncle, who is my age. Recognizing that my aunt might have her life expectancy drastically reduced by being in close proximity to me, we've had to call it off. I'm hoping my wife doesn't get as sick. She has complained about having to wear earmuffs to deal with the whining. Not a sympathetic woman. WH
Sounds like strep and pneumonia....get it cultured.

My 35 year old son had/has it, same symptoms...down and out for 6 weeks. Still feels lung issues coughing at 10 weeks.

Feel free to share your whine, the soapbox is empty.:)

My Dobergirls clotheslined (30’ lead with a dog attached at each end) pretty good in the shop parking lot about a week ago.

My wrists still hurt from where I caught myself as I was on the way down towards the asphalt...

Fortunately I do not believe anyone got it on video so my dumb ass will not likely end up on YouTube just yet! :)

This has been one of the most fun and entertaining posts I've seen here or on any other forum!

Good to know that us into 'geezerhood' have lots of sympathetic company in our ranks with all our complaints and grievances as we continue to age and attempt to enjoy the things we've done our entire lives. Good job all!

I have to keep telling myself to stop forcing my self to keep doing stuff that is doing me no good. We get to a point that we can not recover overnight and it takes a day or two so we can regain our strength. If we keep pushing ourselves, it does more harm than good. Hard lesson! It's pretty pathetic to read how little exercise we should only do a day now. P.S. I woke up this morning feeling really good because I remembered to take my short siesta yesterday. It really helps in your recovery time if you are more active than advised.
I am 82 now and I could not have said it any better. I am up to two naps a day.

As a fifty something, I know just a baby compared with some of you, I notice age creeping up.

The single biggest difference I have found recently is stretching, particularly the legs. I can't recommend it enough. Take a leaf out of the old far eastern people, they are very into that kind of thing and seems very mobile for their age.

The other thing I'm doing is the little and often approach to weight bearing exercise. Build the volume over time to avoid injuries. e.g. six press-ups three times a day rather than one hard session. So far no injuries and I can feel the cumulative effect. Luckily I'm a desk jockey so haven't had the hard life of some of you, but it still comes with its own downsides. Avoid those office cakes!

I saw a poster many years ago while I was doing rehab from whatever dumb Superman thing it was at the time that I just knew I could do, ... wrong!!.

It simply showed the words, either you think you can or you think you can't, ... you are right either way. I have done many things since that time that everybody told me I couldn't do,... yes ,some of them I couldn't do and I paid for trying to do them.

However, most of them I did do. The one thing in life I could never take was not knowing if I could or couldn't do it.

I need to voice an "Un-rant" today. I had my annual yesterday at the VA. I have had six total AO surgeries in the last 20+ years, still kicking. #4 was a Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer almost ten years back.
But, but! The prostate has returned, but three months ago they started me on some pills and a shot every three months that have kept it from metastasizing (spreading) and are 90% sure it will not for at least four more years. That would put me at 80, and about 2030ad.
So y'all are just stuck with me for four more...

deal with it.

Pills Erleada? Shot Lupron or Trelstar?

Yup, will be 72 soon and definitely slowing down. Still trying to stay in shape though and jog 4 miles at daybreak every AM as long as it's not raining or snowing. Takes almost 40 minutes now so pretty darn slow.
Im 54 and you just made me feel old,
I’ll hike 18 miles, for a good reason
But i aint jogging nowhere

The years seem to get shorter with age. From 60 to 70 took about 3 months, 70 to 80 only about 3 weeks. And life changes. Nov. 2016 - PSA at 693, diagnosis stage 4 prostate cancder, metastatic in the bones - spine, ribs, shoulders, hips.......a huge shock. Once it's in the bones there's no getting rid of it. Given 2yrs without treatment, 5yrs with. Radiation, then pills on a clinical trial, and shots. After 9years nowhere near checking out at age 81. Along with cancer treatment side effects, other maladies plus old age aches and pains, life changes. But those problems vs. not being alive, it's a fair trade. I used to dread getting older each year, now each day is gift, and every year is a blessing. I've become a firm believer. Stopped skiing years ago and don't use 15lb guns anymore. When that old motorcycle rebuild is finished, it may just go in the living room to look at and think about younger - stupid - fearless days. Can't do what I used to do but that's ok, life is good.

Of course we age faster than we used to, I can prove it mathematically.
Aging from 0 to 1 is infinitely larger as you started with nothing.
Aging from 1 to 2 is a 100% increase
Aging from 2 to 3 .... The trend continues.....
At 100 going to 101 is only a 1% change, of course that happens quicker!

I just experienced my first major regret due to old age: I cancelled my registration to the Texas State Rifle Association Long Range at Bayou Rifles match to be held in April. I had really been looking forward to thies match.

I started shooting the Bayou Rifles 1000-yard matches in November 2025, shortly after moving to Texas. I have shot rather well at their 3x20 monthly matches, have had no problems doing so, and have really enjoyed it. But when I found out that the April match, which will consist of 3x20 on Saturday plus 2x20 on Sunday, would be shot at a different target for each stage, I realized that there was no way I could set up all my equipment three times on Saturday and twice on Sunday. You see, hauling around and then setting up the front rest, shooting mat, rear bag, mirage spotting scope, ammo box, tablet for the e-target, the rifle and adjust everything now takes me a quite a while.

I talked with several of my new friends there at the last monthly match, and all offered to help me with my equipment. I have received such help occasionally in other matches over the last few years, which I have really appreciated, but this has been for just the first match of the day. I would not feel comfortable doing this five times in a single match.

I am 80, and feel fortunate to still be able to shoot F-Class, prone. I recently attained High-Master, Long-Range classification, and I am happy. I will continue to shoot the Bayou Rifles monthly Long-Range matches when the weather is not too hot, as well as the 500-yard monthly matches at the Temple Gun Club - - as long as I am able.

Could be 82 later this year. Still riding motorcycle but now mostly using a new Can Am Spyder 3 wheeler. Harleys and BMW's just sit as carting the wife on one takes too much leg strength.

Bought a new boat one month ago. Tested it twice. Wondering if I will get to really use it before the inevitable dirt nap.

Use to be a very competitive long-range shooter. Last weeks' 600 yard tournament at Manatee was kind of like my current bicycle riding. I start out on the bike fast and strong. At the end of the daily bicycle exercise I am "pooped". First day of the tournament I was actually 2nd overall and first in Heavy Gun. Started out the second day and it was like the bicycle. Great start and then totally pooped.

Best thing about getting old is to remember it's better to be a "has been" than a "never was".
