Just Whining about Getting Old!

59 in June. Worked hard and played hard all my life, I’ve always been grateful for an adventurous spirit. I’ve been married for 36 of those years, to three different women, lol. The third one has been amazing, never even had an argument in 20 years together which I didn’t think was possible after #1 and #2. We do everything together and it’s been nice to get that part of life figured out, gives peace to the rest of it.

Older I get the more I realize health is wealth. I certainly have some aches and pains. I’ve had back surgery, surgery on both rotor cuffs, high arch problems but overall Im still doing the things I love. Still packing into the back country with the Mrs, brother and kids every year although after this last year Im considering getting pack goats so we can take enough equipment with us to stay for a week and have help packing the meat out. We motorcycle a lot each summer but people on their damn phones is making that less attractive all the time. We fish, rock hunt, fossil hunt…. We include the kids and grandkids when we can.

I’ve been broke twice, made it back and learned some hard lessons. Self employed since my early twenties. My personality doesn’t thrive in a corporate environment, we’ve been blessed the last twenty years and will sell and retire shortly.

One of the best things I’ve done personally is go on a strict carnivore diet. Went from 274 pounds to 215 and have never felt better. More energy, vastly improved blood panels and best of all no gas, lol.

I lost my best friend and cousin 4 years ago, he was 54. That sobered me up on just how fragile life is. We were watching the UFC, grilling steaks, BSing in the reloading room one Saturday and the following Tuesday he was cutting trees (he owned a tree business) collapsed and passed. A part me died with him, we had been together since diapers. Watching the loss affect his 7 kids, watching probate court and all that goes with that really changed how I look at life. Me and my wife formed a living trust immediately for our own seven kids so they don’t have to deal with that.

I’m Gen X, I loved growing up in the seventies and eighties, what fun that was. I wish my kids and grandkids could have experienced life before cell phones and social media messed it up. What a difference it was compared to today or maybe, just maybe I’m getting old…

Last of all kudos to all of you in your 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond still getting after it. I have mad respect for all of you and the challenges you may deal with on a daily basis!

Hey Fellers , be 81 this coming August, first time in my life since I was 6 and Daddy gave me a bull calf and SOLD me two heifers (paid him back with labor and the money from the increase of my little herd) I don't own a cow. Sold out last fall, too old and broke down to tend to them myself. Son and son in law have cattle and wanted to take care of mine but if I can't do it I don't need the cows. Many broken bones, most all my ribs , hands, and feet, back been broken twice, been shot twice, quit drinking and smoking at 62 when I got stents in my heart, beat prostate cancer at 76 with surgery and radiation, got 30 percent hearing in one ear and none in the other one, get cut on at least twice a year for skin cancer on my face and arms, none of my original teeth, BUT I can see good because of cataract surgery AND I am still here, the good Lord still has plans for me and thank Him for every day that He lets me get up and get my feet on the floor. As for making plans, I tried that a few years ago and discovered noise I heard in the background was God laughing. So now days I just try and go which ever direction He points me and as Minnie Pearl use to say "I'm so proud to be here"!!... John
just read this FJ—- sounds like youve lived a full life. Keep on Truckin!!

I need to voice an "Un-rant" today. I had my annual yesterday at the VA. I have had six total AO surgeries in the last 20+ years, still kicking. #4 was a Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer almost ten years back.
But, but! The prostate has returned, but three months ago they started me on some pills and a shot every three months that have kept it from metastasizing (spreading) and are 90% sure it will not for at least four more years. That would put me at 80, and about 2030ad.
So y'all are just stuck with me for four more...

deal with it.

Oh Man, you guy/gals are a bunch of geezers. :)

I'm 68 going on 32. Still dream of skiing deep powder even though my knees are shot. Still think I can ride a sport bike at highly illegal speeds through a tight set of twisties or on the track but I'm not sure my knees would support that type of bike anymore and touching down a knee on a tight corner might make me cry. Gave my last bike to my nephew a couple years ago but I tell myself I can still borrow it back. The reality is that just carrying my 20 pound F Class gun to the firing line followed by the Rodzilla front rest and SEB bigfoot bag filled with heavy sand makes my knees scream these days. My younger shooting partner always tries to beat me to carrying the stuff from and back to the car. I don't argue anymore. :(

That said, just yesterday I did make it up an extension ladder to install a light on the front of the shop about 16 feet off the ground. Even though looking down at the concrete from that wobbly ladder gave me a bit of the willies, I didn't poop myself or freeze and beg to be rescued. Bonus :) Then I had to wire a mini-split from the panel to the disconnect to the main power input of the mini-split. The guys doing the install can't touch wire without an electricians license, the home owner can. They brought a tail to connect from the disconnect to the split. It was 10 gauge. I was a bit pissed. I pulled 12 gauge all the way from the breaker to the disconnect and I hate that stuff. Then they hand me this 10 gauge. I think I expanded the vocabulary of those young fellers doing the install. :)

Anyway, no sense in dwelling on the reduced capabilities, time to start on the next gun build.

Well, after reading all of the comments above about getting old, I feel like I am truly blessed.
Last fall, during Deer Season, at age 86 I hunted every day for eight weeks=Monday through Friday. Went home Friday evening and back to the club Sunday afternoon. Back in one of my stands a good 30 to 45 minutes before the first crack of light. I send my wife a text to let her know that the Bears didn't get me on my long walk in and I didn't fall off the ladder climbing in.
In the off season, I still get to the range once or twice a week , weather permitting... I really enjoy testing different loads with OCW and Seating depth . I've been scouting for Turkeys recently and I'm looking forward to calling in some Gobbler this spring. I usually hunt Turkeys every day (Minday through Friday) for three or four weeks and then I'll start Stripper Fishing in late April -early May on the Roanoke River. I did my annual physical in January and February -Blood work, EKG, ECKO and everything looked great . I have several really nice rifles (BR, BRA, 6 GT, 6X47L etc) that I enjoy testing and banging steel out to 500 yards. I can tell that I'm not 40 YO any more but I feel really good. A little slower than I once was but still going fairly strong. I wish for all of you guys, "All the Best".
