My son & I just shot our first match. We were both using the same rifle, so, we did not get three 20 shot strings in but just two. The rifle was being shot back-to-back & when we started shooting in the morning it was OK, but as noon approached, the temps were in the 90s & the sun was strong and the barrel was getting SMOKING hot. So, I decided getting the third string in was not worth burning up a barrel.
We were shooting F-Class, prone, with the rifle supported by a Harris bipod. The rifle was a Remington 700 AAC-SD (in .308) with a Manners T6A mini chassis Manners w/ a Badger M-5 DBM stock and a Viper PST FFP 6-24x50 scope.
Anyway, I posted a 185-4X and a 177-2X. My son posted a 190-5X and a 178-1X. Both of us had a tough time dealing with the mirage on the second string. Overall we had a blast, feel like we did OK for our first time out. It made me realize how misleading even five round groups are compared to a 20 round string with varying wind.
We had a good time and it was a humbling experience. As I said, shooting 5 round groups can be misleading. Made me realize that what I thought was a 1/2 moa setup is realistically 1 moa. With me shooting a 20 shot string, actually more like 2 moa.
