Just Call Me Mr. 540

Hunted in Georgia the past couple weeks. Finished with 4 does taken to 330 yards and two 8 pt. bucks. Used a muzzeloader, a 7MM mag, my "collector" 270 for three deer and the 257 Roberts (Bob) I call the "pawn shop rifle".

Here's the "little" 8 pt.

Nothing special here. Just my 270 at 160 yards. What's interesting is I parked the rifle after this and decided to use the 257 Bob that killed the giant 14pt. last year. Switched from 100 gr. bullets to 115 Nosler Ballistic Tips. During testing It flat out "murdered" gongs at 565 yards. Energy levels showed about 475 yards to be my top range to deliver 1,000 ft. lbs of energy. I practiced a lot a 450 yards because of that. Glad I did the 500 and 565 gong work.

Buck # 14 that I saw appeared at about 600 yards. It slowly walked toward me and started across a power line. Couple does were with it and none were in any hurry. Darn Bushnell laser is just not good enough at those ranges. I knew it would be under 600 and above 520 as there were power poles at 520 and a hill crest at 600. The deer were behind those poles but how far?

Perfect morning early with no wind and mirage yet. Sun had not gotten around the sunshade I had on the Burris 4.5 - 14. I checked my taped-on chart and remembered the hold for those 565 gongs was right at the point of the thick part of the bottom crosshair at 14 X. Tried a laser again and gave up. It was reading 538 but reading on what?

Man I want a Leica.

Decided to go with 540 and held for a rear shoulder hit. Sent it, the gun jumped and I watched a doe above this buck look down. Then that doe and another moved their heads left as if to follow something a little bit. They stopped.

Swear I saw movement into a dip below where the buck was standing.

Neat heh? My longest big-game kill to date. Yes!

I hope you know how lucky you are to be able to do that. I need to go back to Georgia for a trip. Thanks you for sharing. Nice deer!!!

Nice shooting Cpt.! I just am back from NC and my longest was only 400 yards. Those shooting lanes are tough to shoot. They know that when they are in it they are in trouble! Appear then disappear as quickly. No time to range, dial up and shoot. FYI, my Leica failed to range a big buck in the heavy rain and a bad range call had me missing one at 632!

Well "Mr"... Real interesting observations.

I have hunted out West a few times. Seems longer shots are often easier as there are large openings to view the target and the animals often stay in one spot. In Georgia I can only get my long shots on a power line. It's possible for me to shoot to 1,000 yards but practical, with good backstop, to about 800 yards. The animals move.

The deer tend to walk across the power line and only pause a bit. It's almost impossible to range then along the "rolls" in the terrain and my laser "sucks" at exact distances on deer past about 500 yards. You can easily laser larger areas but the weedy rolls can be upwards of 100 yards across with little to actually focus on.

Just look above the front ring of my "hammer" rifle in this photo. Past the second set of power poles on that bank it's 520 - 600 yards. That is where the buck was for the shot. There are dips in there you can't see and many areas you can't laser. Beyond that last hill is another roll that shows again at 700 yards and then it's up to the top at a 1,000 where you can barely see a third set of power poles in the photo.

The deer just do not stand around often and it can get "dicey" recording an exact range. I have a map posted in the tower with exact ranges done from the far areas back. It's just that you cannot be sure just where the deer actually is so ...

The whole thing is still a challenge, Leica or not.

Normally use rifles in 270, 7MM mag or 338 mag for my "long-range" hunting. Just happened to have used those others, taken recent deer and had this little 257 Roberts out for "exercise".

Do practice to 565 but not happy with the energy delivery above 500 so I normally limit that caliber to below that distance. Have always thought the 257 Roberts - "Bob" - is one of the finest medium-range cartridges ever made. Sad it's not way more popular than 243. It's way more cartridge for general hunting than any 6MM.

If the bullet manufacturers would commit to the "Quarter Bore" it would see more use I'm sure. I would prefer the Ackley Improved version of your caliber just for case stabilization. I owned a pretty custom FN Mauser in .257 Roberts back in the 80's however never fired it. If I recall it was not drilled and tapped for scope mounts and I traded it in on a .44 Magnum Redhawk when the blued version first came out. Still have the Redhawk and wish I still had the FN! :(
