Just Back from a 5 Day Prairie Dog hunt

We just returned from a 5 day prairie dog hunt in South Dakota. We had great weather on Monday, wind was only 5-6 mph ( I could not believe we were in SD with such light winds), and we bagged quite a few. We shoot from rotating benches, there were 4 of us. I shot my 6mmBR, one shot a 22-250, and two shot 204 Rugers. All of us have wind meters, laser rangefinders and ballistics programs on our iphones, so we are not shooting fast, and if the dogs go down we have a beverage and wait, they come back up.

We typically shoot a town for a few hours , then pack our stuff and head to a new town and set up. Sometimes we get 3 towns in a day.

We were never at a virgin PD town, there is a lot of hunting pressure out there, and we had some shots in the 100 to 200 yard range, but we had lots of shots in the 250 to 500 yard range. The light wind meant we could hit those way out ones, and there was no mirage. GREAT hunting.

Tuesday it rained on us, only got a couple shots off. Of all the pd trips I have made in the past 35-40 years, I have only been rained out 3 or 4 days, so while disappointing, it has to be expected.

Wednesday was a repeat of Monday, low wind, great hunting. One of our guys who is relatively new, who had a new Savage in 204 Ruger, hit one at 475 yards, his longest, and it was at the end of the day. He was really pumped up after that hit.

Took the day off Thursday, two of our group went home, and two new shooters arrived that evening to join in our hunt.

Friday was different. Strong winds, 10 to 20 mph, but steady from the west, gusts of only 5-6 mph so the windage adjustments were not too bad. We did well for the conditions.

Saturday started off with the same very strong 20mph winds, but by 10 am the wind was dropping, and by noon, it was 3-5 mph. Sunny, light wind, great hunting.

Here's some pics of a town.

Looks like the kind of adventure we all love. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to post the pics....nice job, nice rifles! :)

I'm not. I spent 2 1/2 days near Casper last week. Our shooting was from around 9AM to 5PM each day less time for moving and eating lunch. We only had 3 hours the last day because we had to get on the road back home. The winds were under 10 MPH the whole time and no rain during the day (did rain the night before day 1). I just finished counting empty brass and the round count was just over 700 rounds. High hit percentage and dogs ranged from just over 100 to just over 600 yards. Shot mostly 22-250 but also some 204 Ruger and even some 6PPC from my custom CZ527. It was a great time with great friends and we are already planning next year.

I just got back from a 3 day PD hunt in MT. I didn't count how many I shot, but we all had enough to pick out targets. I brought 5 rifles 17HMR A17 Savage , RRAs AR-15 ,semi custom 22/250,6mm Creedmoor and 7mm WSM shooting 120gr Nosler BT. Non stop shooting all day no need to move, dogs every where,Average shot was 200yds,change rifles according to heat of bbl. $200 a day for hunt, room and board.I had a cheap swivel bench I bought from Cabelas. Thinking about the DOA bench, they're not cheap. One day was windy and Hot ,end of day after being in sun all day wipes ya out. Round trip was 2500 miles.

Casper? I grew up there in the 60's. I thought my brother and I had killed all the prairie dogs around there...

That's not a bad price for room, board and hunting. I believe we paid a little over $350/day for a 3 day hunt in SD coming up. Our first guide that we went with some years back now wants $460/day. I refuse to pay that and stay in a motel of his choosing at that.

Well done! If I may ask. What NF do you use? Reticle etc.. thanks..

I use the Nightforce 8-32X56 with a NP 2DD reticle. All my PD rifles have target dot reticles, as I use a ballistics program, and generally do not hold off, so I don't need any tic marks.

Heck, I lived in Green River for 11 years and went up to Casper many a times for meetings. He**, I thought the wind always blew at least 20-25 miles per hr. in Casper!!
