joy stick rest

I think I would like to try a joy stick rest.Observing the firing line I see SEBS ,Farley and Shade Tree. Are there others I am not aware of.

Caldwell make an entry level Coax rest, I've never used one myself but if you look around they have some good reviews.
Theres good reason why most use the 3 you mention.. I use a Farley and highly recommend them.

The Caldwell works fairly well. It's heavy enough to not move around on you and the joystick is fairly smooth. I used it to shoot one of my best scores so far.

Few issues:
  • Rear adjustment foot interferes with joystick unless the foot is lowered all the way, not ideal.
  • Top rest won't accommodate wide stocks. You'll have to swap in a Sinclair top to fit wide fore ends.
  • Base seems fragile. Wouldn't take much to snap a leg off.
That being said, it's a good rest for the money.

Several years ago I tried the Caldwell Fire control rest. The thing had many issues right out of the box. I sent it back with out ever shooting off of it. Kinda tainted my opinion of coax rest until I saw SEB and Farley. My first inclination is a Shade Tree to get my feet wet and doesn't break the bank. I was curious because I don't see many non SEB / Farley coax rests.

My experience exactly. The caldwell worked ok for a short time then became jerky and would not hold position. I threw it in the dumpster.

That said it certainly enlightened me to the probabilities of a.quality coaxial rest.

I have a SEB mini that should be here tuesday. My expectations are high.

Holding same POA seems to be the problem with ALL coaxial. If your rifle tracks...should come back in to the same POA with a conventional rest. Using a coax...it never returns to same spot and always moving the joystick. Shooting score is probably the only thing a coax is good for. Above is my Opinion. Like I said....they aren't for everyone.

I've found they, coaxial, are an advantage in FClass as most folks do not have ape length arms to get back on target without getting out of you shooting position. A long sentence. No reason a good coaxial rest can not return to battery properly if they are set up correctly to begin.
All that said, the only advantage to a coax is speed of getting back on target. Somebody said the rear screw gets in the way of the joystick. Why would you need one? A setscrew with a tip is all that is necessary on a coax.

If you are curious just go with a shadetree top. Mounted one on a Caldwell base for a while and now have it on a bald eagle. Has worked great for me after little tension adjustments. Definitely improved my consistency. I usually do have to move the stick after each shot, but it is so easy and fast I don't believe it to be a distraction.

Also, I cut the knob off of the back screw on the bald eagle almost flush with the lock nut so I can get it as low as possible and still have good range of motion for f class.

I hate shooting without one so much that I bought a coax bipod. I've used Shadetree and SEB . Recommend them both.

I like your setup. I was thinking of heating up the stick and then bending it. But. I see how you just cut the adjustment knob off. Gonna do that to mine today.

Thanks for all your inputs fellas. I also got a tip form Ray Porter about Magnum Metal. They make a Farley look a like much less money. I am still of the opinion that a Shade Tree to start might be the smart move. I already have an older model Caldwell with the longer back leg and overalll heavier. Might make a fine candidate for a Shade Tree. I am confused about one thing though. Does the POA move with the elevation change or opposite? In other words . Does POA move with the handle? Some one said a SEB can be set up in reverse. Is this common to all stick rests?

My Shade Tree moves POA down if I move joy stick down and left or right if I move the stick left or right. I love mine on an aluminum Bald Eagle and it is as steady as I need and doesn't give me a hernia carrying it to the firing line.

I made a longer one out of stainless and bent it. I couldn't get used to it.

Farley moves with the handle.... down is down, right is right, etc.

Dolphin Gun Company in the UK makes an excellent co-axial. I bought one when I couldn't get my hands on a Farley quick enough. It cost a little more but I think it was worth it. You can adjust the centre post to line you up with the target which is handy. Construction is top notch too.

I have this exact setup. the joystick knob on the Shadetree is threaded on. i made an extension so the joystick is easier to reach prone and so the rear screw head does not interfere with the knob when lowering the joystick. my rear screw was also cut down to lower the profile further as he has done. works great. btw, my Shadetree top allows the rifle to return to the target with very little re-adjustment, no problem

+1 on the shadetree the adjustments are really smooth and hold the weight of the rifle well
