JJ LOH rest information and idea if you have the plate

in another post, I had mentioned that if you have the plate, for the jj loh rest that travis is making, adding tennis racquet tape to the handle opening is a nice addition so here ya go, just a quick pic of the wrap I was talking about, and its a whole 3.00$ at wallyworld. makes carrying the whole thing easier. and to be honest, before when I carried it, I locked down the center column knob and carried it by the top. thinking about it, that put all the stress on the 2 guide rods that hold the top plate in place. looking back that was a bad idea, cuz if the rods bend, well......, you get the idea. another fyi, I got the rest 16 months ago and topped off the oil. I just checked it and it was quite a bit low, not out, but pretty low. if it runs dry it is bad for the rest:(. stupid simple check and fix if you have one of these. in my opinion, these are crazy good rest and if you spend the money to get one, might as well take care of it:). Jon also told me when I got it that IF you keep the oil full the rest will, in all likelihood, last several generations. makes a great "pass down to the next generation" thingy:cool:. that is all for now and have a great day:rolleyes:

Question. What's happens to the oil? Does it leak out somehow?
yep, there is a really small clearance between the rods and the plate and the oil seeps out as the plate moves across the rods. this is all my opinion, not from Jon. I do KNOW for fact that when you add the oil and put the plugs back in, oil comes out from the pressure created from the plugs going back in. I put paper towels under the rods after I add oil for a couple hours so the oil gets soaked up by the towel instead of getting on the bottom of the rest. yep, thats what I do;)

I know it’s an old thread but since it got revived, I have a question. Are these the plugs you’re taking about? Four of them?

The oil is what keeps it from jumping around under recoil. If you get some strange flyers always check the oil. I was ready to melt mine with a torch til mr loh laughed then told me how to fix it

he told me strait 30 weight full synthetic. when the original oil seeped out, it was purple. I called the original owner and asked if he had ever added or changed the oil. he didnt know about it either. so, by deduction, im pretty sure mine was probably originally filled with royal purple. once again, I dont KNOW FOR SURE, BUT........ John also told me that if you clean all the threads on the bolts and inside the rest and use a decent grease on them(and check the oil) the rest should last MANY generations. I know I really like mine and have compared it to the Sinclair. kinda like comparing a Lexus to a corolla. they will both get the job done but DANG the jj just does it a bunch sweeter. enjoy sir:D
