Jewell Trigger Problem

A couple of weeks my partner and I were shooting in our state Long Range championship. 1000 x 5. On almost every shot his trigger would not cock when the bolt was lifted. This is a 6.5 Nesika with a Jewell trigger. He would have to take the bolt out and set the trigger with the tip of a bullet on every round.

That next Monday the trigger was sent to Jewell. They said the the trigger was filthy and the spring was rusted. Also in our part of the country, the very deep South), you need to clean the trigger every time the gun is shot.

Here's the beef, the gun and trigger are new, less than 700 rounds fired. It has never been shot in the rain. It has been shot in two or three F-Class matches that were very dusty.

I have Jewell triggers on some hunting 700's that have been shot for years in all types of conditions and I have not ever cleaned them. Five of my triggers are very old ones, two are new.

Do you find the new Jewell triggers more maintenance sensitive?
How often do you clean your Jewel's?

Chuck

I've got a Jewell 2-stage on an AR-15, so different platform and perhaps not a fair comparison, but I clean the trigger after I shoot the gun, every time. I also use a bit of lube, like Miltec, Slip 2000, Breakfree or Rem Oil, on a cotton swab, in all the places where there is metal to metal contact.

I once had a problem where the trigger would not reset and discovered that the trigger was too dry and/or dirty. Since then I've cleaned and lightly lubed the trigger and have not had a problem.

Chuck, actually you dont even need to pull the trigger out of your rifle to clean it. Get yourself a bottle of pocket lighter fluid, recommended by Arnold himself), pull the bolt and just squirt it down into the trigger. Works great while your at a match and dont have the time to pull the trigger. This will clean and lubricate the trigger and you can go right back to shooting.

Yep. First time I saw somebody do that I wondered how bad their last group must have been that they were about to set their rig on fire right there on the bench.... :D
