James(Jim) Rockwell, Jr. DBA Rockwell Stocks, Kalispell, Mt.

I'm looking for anyone who may have done business with Jim Rockwell, Jr. in the past. Please PM me with any information you might have on this subject. Thanks.

I've spoken directly with some fellow shooters at the range that I didn't know other than seeing them at the range about their handgun stocks. The three I spoke with told me Jr is very slow on returning calls and emails. All three also stated it took months to get their handgun stocks.

If you're building an XP or rear grip, there are other manufactures out there that could help you out. I checked out his website just now and it appears he is not currently taking custom orders.

If I were you, I would contact him before making any order. Me, I would order from another stock maker.

You are correct. He is no longer taking new orders for stocks. I put money down for a rear grip XP-100 stock ten months ago. Jim, Jr. was communicating for the first few months. Currently he does not respond to emails, text messages, phone calls, or registered mail. The Kalispell Police Department(KPD) was contacted to do a wellness check. The KPD officer asked Jim to contact me. All I received was a short text two months ago saying he would contact me about delivery soon. Complaints have been filed with the Kalispell BBB and the Montana Consumer Protection Agency.

If there is anyone else having issues with Jim Rockwell, I would encourage you to put some pressure on him.

Good luck Royce!

Filed complaint with Montana Consumer Protection Agency after ordering stocks for Anschutz Exemplar and Thompson Contender. Was given a ship date 6 months from order date per phone conversation with him.

After over 10 months, inquired about stocks received no clear answers filed complaint which went nowhere. Was sent a text with picture of Exemplar stock, but has not been shipped even with request to ship it. He claimed in letter to agency he'd not finished stocks because unable to contact me with a question.

I'd paid with cc at time of order, over $500. Seems Montana thinks it's okay to take money then not deliver product. Seems he gets away with it because on website it states that there is no guarantee of ship date for products ordered from him/company. Discoverd this months after phone order. Yet he'll give ship date per phone conversation with him. I'm resigned that I've lost my money, but if I take motorhome to that part of country I'll be making a stop at local police dept. to make complaint of theft then I'll be knocking on his front door and parking motorhome in front waiting.

Complete scammer. Then the nerve to text photo of stock and not ship it. A blight on the firearms aftermarket. And Montana Consumer Protection Agency seems to support a company that clearly steals from it's customers.

I appreciate you updating me your situation. Jim is following the same path with me as he took with you and your stocks. He informed me several months ago that his wife had filed divorce proceedings on him and he was having dark moments. Can't imagine why anyone would want to put up with his nonsense.

I'm sad to hear that things have devolved so far for Jr. I knew Sr. was a scam artist after my own experiences in having ordered a stock from him, but it seemed Jr. was trying to be on the up & up - and that was my experienced when I paid Sr. to make me a Savage Striker stock a handful of years ago; lots of delays, then Jr. stepped in and made the stock (I believe for free, frankly, just to cover his dad's butt), despite the fact Sr. claimed he was the one who made it. My shipping label came from Jr's address, and the shop in the background of the photos Jr sent during the process reflected Jr's shop. I haven't spoken with him for a few years now, and of course, a lot can change, and especially a lot does change when divorce becomes part of the equation. Choices are made, and I'm sad to hear that Jr. seems to be following after Sr.

So its Montana's fault?
He came from Michigan maybe you should blame Michigan.
I think where the alleged crime took place might have something to do with it.
Glad I have no dog in this fight.

It appears the apple has not fallen far from the tree.

It is very unfortunate for those of us who really enjoy single shot bolt action pistols.
There are very few stock makers which produce wooden or laminated stocks. It's
about economics. A very small market for the manufactures. Manners Stocks does produce
a pistol stock for the bolt action market. I would like to see Richard's Micro-Fit of California
produce a rear and center grip stock. It can't be that difficult to program their machines to
make pistol stocks. They already have the wood and laminates as well as the various
styles of stocks in inventory.

Not defending any one, more offering an explanation so you better understand and possibly get something done.

First off, not sure if you just didn’t get the name right, but there is no “Montana consumer protection agency”, you probably meant “office of consumer protection”. Not that the name matters much, but the Montana OCP is nothing more than a consumer advocate. They really can’t do anything. If you look at what they do or mission statement, you got exactly what they are designed to. Try to negotiate a settlement, determine if a crime as been committed and point you in the direction you should go for a resolution.

In this case it looks like his disclaimer saved his ass. It’s likely that it was suggested to him that he stop taking orders until he fills the current backlog. Basically probably told him that taking orders he can’t possibly fill, could be considered fraud and or theft. That’s all within their job description. Might be worth at one of the internet archive sites and see if that disclaimer was there when you ordered.

As for the police, good luck. They don’t even respond to thefts under $1500 unless it was a robbery. Thefts under $1500 are not a felony. You fill out a form online. There’s only a handful of states left with a $500 threshold for felony theft.
Then based on the finding of the OCP, it sounds like you have a contract dispute over delivery time. Civil case.

Best you can do is hope to find a whole bunch of people with the same problem and hope they can show intent instead of bad business. Good luck with that since your’s looks like the only complaint on file. This process really isn’t any different in Montana than anywhere else.

A couple other warnings, if you do decide to bring you Motorhome and camp out in front of his house, I mean business, sorry housebusiness, it’s illegal in Kalispell to live in a motor vehicle while parked on a city street. Plus I’m pretty sure by his address he’s located in the residents only parking on street area located around the high school. That means you’ll need a special permit to park there certain times of the year, even if you’re not living in the vehicle. Hate to see you drive all the way up there and have your vehicle impounded.

Wish you luck.

I have come to the conclusion that my time and energy would be better applied to something more useful in life. Chasing a dream of getting a stock or refund from Rockwell Stocks is a waste of time. You can't beat a dead horse back to life.
Thanks for everyone's inputs on the subject. Like most things in life, 90% of the problems are created by 10% of the population.

I talked to some of the other people that have ordered from him and most said they eventually got their stock but average was 10 months to a year. And he has always been hard to get hold of or get a straight answer from.

because of the way he does business and the feud between father and son is the reason I never ordered anything from him.

Just a suggestion but, Richard's Micro-Fit makes rifle stocks with a BUNCH of different designs to choose from. If you're thinking "bolt action pistol" maybe find a rifle stock design that might fit your needs, cut the back end off at the grip and make it fit a SP??
Don't need another but been thinking another SP on a Savage action. Got my eye on a couple of rifle stocks that would make a good candidate. From the grip forward is all you're concerned about. ;)

Put an ad up in the classifieds.
Maybe someone has a rear grip XP stock they'd part with or possibly make one for you.

I have considered this option. It would be a good opportunity to work on my wood working stills.
