J. Lederer Barrels

My experiences. I have purchased 21 barrels from James and chambered another 9 for customers that purchased there own. The first thing about James's barrels are the consistency from barrel to barrel. The groove diameters have very little ratchet compared to other cut barrel makers. He learned his craft at rock creek when there barrels were sought after. James is a one man show and getting ahold of can be challenging sometimes. Call late in the day. All of the barrels I've shot and received feedback on have been good barrels. The 1.45 unlimited barrel he made for me is a very good barrel. We'll see how it performs next year.

James Lederer contacted me last week and I ordered the barrel we had discussed earlier. The barrel arrived Saturday . Thanks to Mr Lederer.
All is good

Thanks Jim

Hi all,

This thread was brought to my attention. I would be happy to answer any questions you all may have.

My lead times right now are pretty short. Less than 4 weeks in most cases. Keep in mind I am a one man shop, and sometimes it is difficult to estimate.

Pm sent for a new barrel

Just an update. Posted earlier that I have a Lederer barrel and shot a match without doing very much load development. Here is a new target. The 10-shot group (44.9) is the load I used in above electronic target for shots 11-20. I like the looks of 44.5 and 44.7 and the ES on the few shots at 44.5. I will be trying 44.5 and 44.6 at another 300m match on Sunday. Will be cold (below 10oF) but better than not shooting, right...

Are you doing any stress relieving to your blanks?

I don't do any stress relieving on my barrels. Being a cut rifled barrel, the manufacturing process does not induce any significant stresses.

That being said I am pretty happy with my steel supplier. My steel is stress relieved twice before it gets to me. If there are any stresses in the steel it shows up as warping when the barrel is contoured. I have never seen that with any of my barrels, and in my 11 years of experience making cut rifled barrels I have only seen two lots of steel where that occurred.

If that were to happen I'd be on the phone with my steel supplier pretty darned fast. In my experience it's very difficult if not impossible to completely remove residual stresses from when the steel was manufactured, so it would cause the alarm bells to go off pretty quick.

Whats your experiance/opinions on cyro treatment?

Whats your experiance/opinions on cyro treatment?

I have to admit I have no personal experience with cryo treatment. I have talked to gunsmiths that do. I have been told more than once that they can easily tell which barrels have been treated and which haven't.

My opinion is that it doesn't do much for stress removal, but I think it probably does improve machinability. If it makes the gunsmith's job easier it's probably a good thing.

I have never heard of a barrel that shot worse after being cryo treated, so i think it's very safe to say that it doesn't hurt anything.
