I've read back enough to know this question doesn't get much response but I have a question on a 1 i

New guy here.
As mentioned I've read back far enough to know this question doesn't usually generate much interest but.....
I'm currently having a 1 in 12 twist 26 inch 6X47 Lapua built with the goal of launching 65 to 75 grain projectiles, probably V-Max's if the rifle agrees) at assorted vermin. I got to thinking that perhaps by now some of the earlier questioners might have developed some load data and opinions on this endeavor?
Also I re-barreled a 1 in 14 6BR to a .20 caliber Dasher and ended up with beau coup 70 grain 6MM bullets left behind. As I'm sure some of you will understand that's a perfect reason to have a new rifle built and I opted for the 6X47 Lapua for a little more umph than the 6BR. I know this flies in the face of reason but logic has no place in affairs of the heart or gun projects.
Any experiences with this approach to the round would be most helpful. Thanks.

montdoug,

The 6 x 47 should make a great varmint. But I have not done one myself. It should be in the same range as a 243. I shot 70BT with varget. Also H414 is great powder for light bullets. It will fill the case very well and will give you a lot of speed.

I built my first BR on a Hall action in 12tw to shoot the 80gr bullet. I found 80 Fowler's and Berger shot great. out to 600yds or better.

If I were starting out I would try Varget, and H414, with your 70 gr bullets. Give the 80 gr a try. The varmint bullet I like the best is the 70gr. Sierria Biltzking.

Look at www.varmintsforfun.com John is working on a 6 X 47 10tw he may have some load data by now.

I posted several loads for my 6X47L 1 in 10 twist PacNor barrel with 70 to 95 gr bullets, maybe a year and a half ago. Stosh and others have done so as well. You can do a search using our user names to find these posts. I found VV N550 gave good velocity and accuracy with all bullet weights tried. Vic

Thanks guys. I'm well stocked in two of the powders mentioned, Varget and H414 as I shoot p-dogs in high temps however I'm not overly fond of fine ball powders like H414 due to temp sensitivity, but then I'm use to shooting sub .22 calibers a lot and they spike pressures a lot different than larger tubes do so it's worth a try.
vlcakc I did read your posts before and had a question on that. While I don't have but 1lb of N550 last year I had a senior moment and double ordered quanities in one I shoot in the .20 Dasher, N540. In fact I have an embarrassing amount of it. Do ya think it'd be too fast, especially with say the 65 grain V-Max?? It's about half way between Varget and N550 in burn rate so I'm thinking it might work well.
I know Fireball that posts here and he already touted Varget highly so it's on the short list.
Not much info out there on this approach to the 6X47 so all input is much appreciated.

Sorry, can't help you with N540 loads as I have never shot any. As you say it might work with lighter bullets. I used the same idea as Randy and used Hodgdon's 6/250 loads as starters. The two are close enough in case capacity that it works pretty well. Use the starter loads and work up from there. Good shooting. Vic

Thanks Vic.
I shoot a lot of sub .22 caliber wildcat stuff so venturing into uncharted waters isn't very intimidating, kinda fascinating actually. I quit the 'velocity quest game years ago so it's 'start low and work up slow', accuracy is the goal and get what ya can safely for velocity and call er good.
Truth be told it's probably a titch of laziness but starting loads and powders are all that matters to me really. And that 6-250 starting points was great advice.
After I get the varmint aspect handled I might well take a run at something on the order of the Speer 80 grain Hot Core. It's being built on a reasonably light rifle and oughta fill the bill nicely for a grandsons first deer huh? :)
Should be a nifty round. I have a .20 Dasher and filling both cases,Dashers a fired case 6x47 isn't)to the juncture of the neck and the top of the shoulder with H335 I ended up with near exactly 5 grains more capacity in the 6X47. I agree it oughta be nipping at the heels of the .243.
I sure appreciate you fellas taking your time to respond. Waiting for a new one to come back is what I do worst. Oh well, got 300 necks to turn and cases to prep and segregate, should have rifle in fist by mid June.

I agree with Mark about the Varget and 70 gr bullets..I have a 6 x 47 Lapua live varmint rifle, with a Krieger 8 twist barrel. With Varget and Berger 69gr LD bullets, danzaked), I can get better than 3600fps. With Fowler 80gr bullets and R-15, I am getting better than 3400fps. Both these bullets group very good. I also have some loads using R-17 and Sierra 95gr SMK. R-17 will make this round hum with heavier bullets...

I coat my bullets with danzak, tungsten disulfide)and don't clean much. Another thing, if you want a great, long range bullet, those 80gr Fowler bullets are the ones..You can still but them too.

Enjoy your 6 x 47 Lapua
