I've got an itch for a mini 14 223/556

I've HAD two of them over the years, the most accurate of the two was a 5-6" gun at 100 yards. The other one was minute of dinner plate accurate.

One of the imponderable mysteries of life...like why a kamikaze pilot wore a helmet....is why for years people have kept paying that kind of money for rifles that inaccurate.

I worked at Tucker prison and the mini-14's they had in the Armory and in the towers were the most rusted out, battered specimens of firearm shaped objects I'd ever seen in my life. Maybe I'm being too hard on their condition, but I was gunnery officer on a minesweeper back in the day, and by comparison to the prison rifles, the Navy rifles were in tip top shape even considering the salt air environment.
Yea it was tucker and cummins he worked at. Hes a nuclear plant guard now so hes got it made weapon and pay wise comparatively

With all the hoopla about AR 15's I'm wanting a mini 14.

Anybody here have one they like ?

I've also read about shot out barrels but the old ones sure catch my eye. Are they hard to rebarrel ?
the opinions youre getting about the accuracy of factory mini 14s are warranted. Accuracy of most of them have been poor and thats being generous. However there was a company that advertised in the rags back when about being able to rebarrel a mini and make it an inch shooter. So mabie the potential is there. If somebody gave me one Id try it. Im not paying for one though. lol

I had one for a long time that shot well after dumping a ton of money into it. It would regularly shoot less than 1 moa with handloads. I managed to move it about a year ago
There use to be a place in Odessa tx that overhauled them to make them shoot but has been out of business for a while now.
The other place is in Colorado, I think. Accuracy Systems.

Anybody need a thumbhole stock for one, cheap?

the place in Tx was the one i was thinking of

I've had half a dozen over a 30 year period. I had the heavy barrel target model that did about moa but most(older pencil barrel)are 3-4 moa at best.ive seen two newer versions at our range with a slightly heavier barrel in 300 BO shoot under 2" often.
I find them reliable and fun.i now just own a mini 30 stainless and it's about SKS accurate.

Get a Ruger 10/22 and trick it out. You'll be much happier and it will keep you busy for a while.

I had a .223 mini 40 years ago. It was awesome for hip shooting and wearing out old junk cars with mag dumps - but that's all. Out of all the guns I've ever owned, I don't miss it, didn't like it, and don't even remember what I did with it or care what happened to it. Stock ergonomics sucked too.

Talk with Carl at Accuracy Systems Byers, CO.
I'm on the fence could say yes or no to a mini-14; but to each their own. Carl's done some other work for me and I'll happily pass along his info.

Sounds to me that if it never rusted, and shot accurately, more people would be interested. Carl will give you a full rundown for what it takes to rebarrel.

Of coarse you know you can get wood stock sets for an AR? Have you got a mini-14 yet? One thing i consider good about them is you can get one with scope rings right from the factory and mount the scope in normal position on center with the bore.

I'm thinking... To get something as easy to shoot as an AR that won't be targeted by the gun grabbing politicians.
Since they go by sight, the wood stocks, no pistol grip & no skeleton butt stock seems to be a good idea.

I said “SCREW THEM” and bought the little AR pistol. I’ve been looking at them for over a year for a short truck/tractor gun. Those varmints pop up when you least expect it! Just thought I’d get it now, before the ban.
I thought the mini 14 was on the list?

when we had the assault rifle ban mini 14s were on the banned list. instead you could get a Garand from CMP- they werent on the banned list since they dont accept a detachable magazine. shoot 30/06 to boot so you could actually do some damage.
